UNRWA funding cuts threaten Palestinian lives in Gaza and region, say 20 NGOs

Oxfam Australia Media Release

Oxfam, together with 19 other aid organisations, is deeply concerned and outraged that some of the largest donors have suspended funding for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), the main aid provider for millions of Palestinians in Gaza and the region. The aid cuts come amid a rapidly worsening humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza.

The suspension of funding by donor states will impact life-saving assistance for over two million civilians, over half of whom are children, who rely on UNRWA aid in Gaza. The population faces starvation, looming famine and an outbreak of disease under Israel’s continued indiscriminate bombardment and deliberate deprivation of aid in Gaza.

We welcome UNRWA’s swift investigation into the alleged involvement of a small number of UN staff members in the October 7th attacks. We are shocked by the reckless decision to cut a lifeline for an entire population by some of the very countries that had called for aid in Gaza to be stepped up and for humanitarians to be protected while doing their job. This decision comes as the International Court of Justice ordered immediate and effective action to ensure the provision of humanitarian assistance to civilians in Gaza.

152 UNRWA staff have already been killed and 145 UNRWA facilities damaged by bombardment. UNRWA is the largest humanitarian agency in Gaza and their delivery of humanitarian assistance cannot be replaced by other agencies working in Gaza. If the funding suspensions are not reversed we may see a complete collapse of the already restricted humanitarian response in Gaza.

With approximately over one million displaced Palestinians taking shelter in or around 154 UNRWA shelters, the agency and aid organisations have continued to work in near-impossible circumstances to provide food, vaccinations, and fresh water. The countries suspending funds risk further depriving Palestinians in the region of essential food, water, medical assistance and supplies, education, and protection.

We urge donor states to reaffirm support for the vital work that UNRWA and its partners do to help Palestinians survive one of the worst humanitarian catastrophes of our times. Countries must reverse these funding suspensions, uphold their duties towards the Palestinian people and scale up humanitarian assistance for civilians in dire need in Gaza and the region.

I’m over 80 years old. In my time I cannot remember how many Hollywood movies there were featuring the suffering of the Jews due to the bastardry of Nazis and other fascists. How we felt so much sympathy for their plight. The Jewish peoples would know better than any what evil is. And here we are witnessing more such evil at the hands of…well, Jewish people. Their actions in Gaza have well and truly diluted what sympathy I had for them.

Mossad failed to detect a break out of their prison which was capable of doing some real harm?
However, they will tell you in detail exactly who took part in it.
They can track down, and murder any person who is causing them some bother, wherever that happens to be.
Borders dont hamper their vengeance, with USA complicit.
If i had sympathy for survivors of the “Holocaust”, then this has now been fully eclipsed by the lying tactics they employ against Palestinians living on their own land.
“Never happen again” has been rudely abused by the Jews who coined the expression, and they are now totally discredited.
They are capable of full blown genocide in full view of us all.

The degrading situation in Gaza appears to be in accordance with the historical policy of the United States of America, also that Israel holds a military alliance with that most untrusted nation…That cares not for civilian populations of any targeted country. No matter the heights of international resolution, the USA seeks its interventionist capacity that ultimately destroys civilian lives, as witnessed through their past use of covert or indiscriminate bombing strikes and the nowadays more preferred deadly missile strikes. Another subject up for consideration is that the USA can no longer afford to engage in their war dog international killing frenzies, yet they will continue, as the US is currently plotting their controls over the rising new international trading unit of cryptocurrency, Bitcoin.
America, knowing full well the diminishing value of its fiat currency, or be it their petrodollar, the iconic US domiciled BlackRock funds investment house is busy pronouncing, that Bitcoin will be the new US monetary theme adopted across the international financial trading houses.
Hence, maybe, the cause of so many International aid agencies, currently suspending their contributory international aid monies.
Hmm, why has our national media been silent about this new iconic USA financial phenomenon of Bitcoin, as it is going to impact the entire world?

    Douglas Pritchard:
    Well said.
‘Mossad failed to detect a break out’. I would posit that given their competence in skullduggery, they did know about the pending attack. It suited the Israeli government for this to happen, giving them the excuse to make sure there can never be a successful two-state solution in the region and to excercise their propensity for revenge. Netanyahu himself needs this war to stay out of prison for alleged civil crimes he has committed.
No doubt the Israelis will not reach the industrial summit of 6 million killed, but with their sense of self-righteousness, I wonder if there is any number they would baulk at?

Netanyahu, Likud and the feckless and conveniently incompetent IDF along with the zionista appear to be quite happy to give the whole world the finger.

Inextricably the ‘west’, Europe, UK & USA have gerrymandered the situation, and now Netanyahu and Likud are blackmailing them.

The breathtakingly incompetent and criminally minded Netanyahu and Likud have no viable future plan for the Palestinians or Arabs generally. It seems they expect the rest of the world to suck it up for them, whilst they get on with breeding up their mini-Reich.

The UN & UNRWA divisive ‘gotcha’ by Israel has been immediately attended to. Any continuing pausing by donors to UNRWA should be immediately dropped, otherwise it could be seen as an unlawful complicity, let alone an utterly inhumane wedge.

Israel has form when it comes to NGOs that don’t side with it. Remember the six human rights organisations that it branded as terrorist groups, but provided no evidence? Remember World Vision Australia’s Gaza manager Mohammad el-Halabi, in an Israeli gaol because of ludicrously false charges of siphoning charity money to Hamas?. Remember venerable organisations like Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch being pilloried for anti-Semitism when they argued that Israel was an Apartheid State? And it’s had it in for UNRWA ever since it was created in 1949 because it enables Palestinians to stay on land Israel covets. And isn’t it highly suspicious that Israel releases the names of these twelve UNWRA workers immediately after being told by the ICJ that it must guarantee more aid to Gazans?

  8. Andrew Smith

There is codependent narcissism going on between Netanyahu and Hamas regimes, using and throwing Israeli and Palestinian civilians under a bus.

Remember, with comparison of German et al. Jews and others under Nazis did not provoke the latter, presuming there would blow back on their communities.

First, Old fella. Good posting, from another another old fella.

The rabid right in the USA loathes the restraints, constraints and logic based approach of the UN and its desire to expose overt imperialism: most of the membership are victims of it. These want the money given, given back in more tax cuts for its oligarchy instead, if not an increqse in defence spending to conduct more conquests.

Anyhow, it seems most here know the real situation and some of the chicanery tricks involved.

I still feel it is a little like the failed Voice referendum. Lots of othering, fear and loathing. So the mugs reacted in a sort of paranoia, symbolically ridding us of “natives”. Proximity plays a role, perhaps a fear of defeat by the Arabs and the Israelis acted repulsively, but would we have done better given the traits revealed in our Voice rejection.

I noticed to day many people invoking Hannah Arendt and folk can get my position from that.

The Israel experiment has failed. It is now a rogue pariah state answerable to no authority, even though the evidence points to it being a strategic military outpost for the USA who have now lost control. Zionism is a European political movement that has morphed into nothing more then a brutal satanic cult of inhumane comiving extremist, evil degenerate savages and notorious pathological lying monsters whose victims are not only Palestinians but also the Jewish religion irself, unforgivable. Zionist have not only stolen Palestinian land but Zionists stole the Jewish religion.
Zionist Israel remains a constant and violent reminder of how embarrassingly flawed, futile and not fit for pirpose Western diplomacy and US hegemony is.
What reasonable thinking person could have ever imagined that “never again” IS happening again. The macabre reality is it is being perpetrated by those who should know better. Zionist Israeli’s are, to their own detriment and folly, repeating the history that will forever now be the most shameful of a very shameful Zionist Israeli history. The holocaust has been revisited and is being used as a template by those who were the central advocates of “never again”, Zionist Jews. Like Satanic slaves Zionist Jews are emulating the horrors of the Nazi’s final solution, the holocaust.
Now Zionist Israel is relying on world sympathy fatigue and amnesia. They are biding their time for the world to look away so that they can finish the job they started back in 1948. That is, the elimination of the Palestinian people through cruel and unusual collective punishment and ethnic cleansing genocide. With luck, they hope, the world will stop their bleeding-heart moaning about Gaza and the plight of the Palestinians. The joy of the eradication of the ‘Palestinian Problem’ will, God willing, be complete in 2024.
Not so! “Never again” means “never again” especially for Zionist Jews.
The war in Gaza has shone a very bright light on the 75 years of Palestinian pain, torture and dehumanising torment at the hands of the colonizing Zionists. The UN has become a toothless tiger and a favourite whipping boy for Zionist Israeli to continually undermine and demean while
the complicity in war crimes by Western enablers, particularly the US, has bought the “civilised” world to not only a tipping point but a breaking point. The genie is out of the bottle and barbarism and inhumanity rules supreme. Who now has the authority or virtue of actions to hold anyone to account ever again?
In the future, every criticism of Russia, Iran, North Korea and China will be undermined by uncomfortable comparisons with the “civilised West’s” support for genocide and the many war crimes committed, some of the most disturbing being the desecration and destruction of 18 cemeteries and destruction of 26 hospitals in Gaza, unforgivable. Add that to the over 300 medical staff and the 122 journalists targeted and assassinated plus the slaughter of all the animals in the zoo.
Washington’s confected alternative to international law, the so-called “rules-based international order”, is now exposed as nothing more than a hypocritical protection racket effectively operating on a mantra that echoes double standards that has left it in tatters and free fall.

Did folk see the clip of body bags- eighty of them- some with lots of blood seeping, returned From Israel to Gaza?

If you are like me, do you uncomfortably ponder on when and how the Palestinians died, where why and how.

Has anyone had further info on this?

  12. Douglas Pritchard

What do you call 3 (Shin Bet) folk who impersonate doctors, walk into a hospital, and find the selected ward, then take out silenced pistols, proceed to shoot and kill 3 people, and then leave?
Well I would call them murdering assissins who should stand trial, and be held accountable.
But, this is Israel, the Jewish homeland, who account to nobody, and rate themselves above the law.
They are certainly no friends of mine, so why do they still hold the right to exist in a lawfull world?

  13. Fred

DP: They could have simply arrested the 3 victims as the Israelis have total control of Gaza, but no they have shown their true colors – a bunch of murderous thugs. The Geneva convention prohibits the murder of any sick or injured – see article 12 in https://ihl-databases.icrc.org/assets/treaties/365-GC-I-EN.pdf so Israel is committing war crimes.

  14. Zathras

It’s true that Israel is squandering whatever global (minus Arab) good will it may have previously enjoyed and will be left as a pariah state and taint all those who were complicit. History will not be kind, especially as “Millennials” are outnumbering “Boomers” and have no obligation to the past.

They have cashed in the remaining sentiment of collective sympathy and guilt for the Holocaust. That universal “get-out-of-gaol” card excuse may no longer work, now that they have used the blood of innocents to shed the blood of other innocents themselves once too often.

Six million Jews died in those death camps but that’s out of an estimated total of 17 million. Seven million Russians also died in those camps as well as Jehovah’s Witnesses, gypsys, gays, political prisoners, communists, Trade Union leaders and many other groups but only one has exploited that tragedy.

Such statements no doubt will be called “Anti-Semitic” but it was a former Israeli government member who admitted that accusations of anti-Semitism are “a trick to shut down debate and discussion”.
I can freely criticise Myanmar over their treatment of Rhohingyas and not be called “anti-Buddhist” or India over their treatment of Christians and Muslims and not be called “anti-Hindu”.

The attack on UNRWA is really a diversion and the removal of the last hope for the Palestinians and over 100 UNRWA members have been killed in this current slaughter, not to mention the several other attacks over the last 16 years.

  15. Terence Mills

Having herded 1.2 million Palestinians into Rafah, Israel has now turned Rafah into a deadly ghetto.

How history has a habit of repeating itself.
