Well, I’m appalled. Apparently there are more people on Disability Support Pensions than war wounded. What’s wrong with our soldiers? Weren’t they trying hard enough? Gees, no wonder we lost at Gallipolli.
Oh, not the message I’m supposed to take from this? Ah, apparently, I’m meant to think that people on the DSP are slackers and that it’s about time that the stood on their own two feet. Unless they only have one, of course, in which case the remark about standing on their own two feet is a little insensitive. Still, we’re not meant to worry about offending people these days.
KEVIN ANDREWS: The problem with the DSP, and this has been the case for years, probably decades, is that it’s been a set and forget payment.
People have been put on the DSP and that’s been the end of it, and they could stay there for years or decades. We’ve said, look, we should be looking at the capacity of people.
Now, one would have thought that they’d occasionally be reviewed. But no, apparently once you’re on a DSP, that’s the end of it. Mm, according to some people, the Public Service don’t seem to know this.
But the message from the Abbott Government is very clear. You need to take responsibility for yourself, it’s not up to the government to help you. Personal responsibility. And, oh, stop thinking about yourself and support this Budget for the good of the country.
As for the unemployed, well, we know that they’re lazy and choosy. It’s about time that they followed the lead of Tony Abbott’s daughter, Louise, who had to move to Switzerland to find work. If you’re unemployed, you should be prepared to move to where the jobs are, so in the case of car industry workers, that means moving to Japan or Korea. As Mr Abbott said, they should be prepared to take any job they could reasonably do. After all, if a woman in her sixties can do phone sex, what could we expect of younger, more able people?
Yes, “earn or learn” that’s the motto. Why don’t the unemployed do a uni course, and build up a HECs commitment? They should pay more for their course, because it’ll help get the Budget back in the black. After all, we don’t want to saddle our children with debt.
My experience as a potential employer backs up this view of the unemployed. Just last month, I interviewed several candidates for a job as my personal assistant, but all refused the job on the grounds that they also wanted to be paid. Now, in my day, we’d have been grateful just to have the experience and the dignity of work, but no, these days young people have to have everything – the mobile phone, the ipad, food, shelter. Mark my words, by the time Abbott is finished, they’ll be happy to take on the job in order to have a roof over their head during business hours.
As that Liberal MP, George Christensen said: “Aussies should do tour of Asia & live like locals to put these 1st world complaints re budget in perspective.” Well, the great thing about this Budget is that it may give some Australians the chance to try this, without the need for a trip overseas.
Author’s Apology: In a recent blog, I listed some of Abbott’s great qualities. Unfortunately, I’d failed to notice the resemblance to Churchill and Kennedy, which Barnaby Joyce pointed out. I am yet to ascertain whether it was for Churchill’s decision to send the troops in during a miners’ strike, his role in the bombing of Dresden or his attitude to Indian independence where he remarked, “The truth is that Gandhi-ism and everything it stands for will have to be grappled with and crushed”. Whatever, I can certainly see why Abbott reminds him of Churchill. As for Kennedy, he was a womaniser, whose presidency only lasted three years – one of the shortest on record. I see no resemblance whatsoever.

Interesting. I never realised the government had abandoned the metric system and chosen “numbers of war wounded” as an official unit of measurement.
Units of measurement are taking an interesting turn. We measure things in Olympic swimming pools and teaching hospitals. Co-payments are measured in middies and cigarettes. Debt and interest will however be written as numbers with all the appropriate zeros and they will never be referred to in comparison to anything.

And just to assist people with disabilities better themselves and get off the DSP, and by the power of sheer illogic, Abbott and Hockey decided to cancel the Pensioner Education Supplement (as per my comment in Victoria’s post), amounting to the princely sum of $62.40 per fortnight. Who needs a financial incentive when you can denigrate and brow-beat people into the ground…

As for the idea that unemployed people are refusing to accept anything but their “dream job”…. where is the proof of this? Is it really something that’s happening? Is there a significant of unemployed who are knocking back suitable jobs because they are holding out for something better? Or is Abbott just telling fibs to gee-up his shrinking base of supporters?

since he finished and passed his VCE
He gets $120 a week to roll them, band them and put them out
he delivers for whole town, lot of walking involved
so he earns $7 an hour
He is working the crap jobs for pittance already
like a lot of other kids,
and because he works and declares his wage
his youth allowance is reduced
unlike his 52yr old white male father, who earns at least $120 an hour
and dodges his taxes,in his motor trimming business, a lucrative trade
has another little second hand business in Melb flogging retro stuff off to the rich
in one of those permanent market, he is corrupt
been ripping this country, and his sons off for years

In my family it is 50%.
What happens to the many injured workers, who due to the drastic changes in WorkCover are left to fend for themselves as cutoff periods apply, or they don’t get repaired enough to go back to work, gone are the days where payouts covered these people for the rest of their lives after being permanently injured.
They are let down by a system whose main purpose is to look after injured workers, broken people shuffled around to yes men specialists, until they are forced to leave the protection of WorkCover or have their payments lashed until they can no longer support themselves.
Where do these people end up, on the DSP, and now that is even being denied, let down by two systems designed to protect disabled people, society truly has become a throw away society, when workers are thrown into living in poverty for being injured at work through no fault of their own.

Well Kennedy was off screwing around somewhere while Jackie was at home having a miscarriage. Tony walked away from a pregnant girlfriend because he was too young to be a father at 22yo. So I can see some resemblance. Both of them are/were complete arseholes.

Yes, many of these journalists would have children facing the tough times ahead. I’ve never thought much of the profession but my opinion has fallen to an all time low if they are still supporting the likes of Merde-och.

Yes there are some choosy unemployed people out there. I’ve met some of them. I don’t know what percentage they comprise of the unemployed population though. It’s in their best interests to take any job that they are reasonably able to do and then look for something better. It’s easier to find a job when you already have one.
My ex-sister-in-law and her husband were unemployed for many years. His options were limited as he only has 1 arm. But she was quite able bodied. After many years on welfare I recall that over a period of several months Centrelink informed her of a number of vacancies in her area and she had lame excuses about why she couldn’t do any of them. Finally they told her that if one of them doesn’t take one of these jobs, they would lose their payments. So it appears that Centrelink does monitor for these lazy people and gives them an ultimatum where vacancies do exist.
I’m intrigued to know how much I can earn on a phone sex line and how many hours per day I’d be on the phone. It has potential as a stay at home job and hopefully leave me with enough time to do lots of stuff that I can’t get done now because I have to go to work. It would be far less stressful than my current job too. Does anyone know?

I’m a DSP “set and forget”. In my case it is the most appropriate decision. I have lived with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome since the age of 4 and burned myself out over the last 40 years. I wasn’t properly diagnosed until 2000! That particular doctor was de-registered because she was curing people. Unfortunately I got to her a little too late. So, I’m stuck.
Even “lazy” people commit to more activity than I can even dare consider. It is not uncommon for me to go to be one night, and wake up two days later, unaware of the missing time. I destroyed a $5000 camera because I simply couldn’t expend the energy to walk down a flight of stairs to close the iris which subsequently meant the time and effort put into acquiring it were equally wasted.

Maybe people will move to where the jobs are, right out of liberal run Australia and somewhere more compassionate and understanding never to return.
Mikestasse, no of course there is no blowout. And if there was might it mean ‘something else’ such as people with disabilities such as mental illnesses now being recognised as such. I feel so acutely sorry for people with ‘invisible disabilites’ such as myself – I’m hearing impaired which although doesn’t stop me working, does severely limit my options.

A family friend has a glass eye after an accident as a child. Centrelink told him that is was a temporary disability. I work for a government department which is being impacted by the budget in a very negative way. We are working harder for less and giving more of what we earn as charity to cover the gaps that have been left by charities loosing funding. It is only going to get worse and we are going to have to pay more in tax now too. How are we going to support these people who are moving to find work when they are leaving their families and support networks and the charities and support groups that used to exist to help them have had their funding cut or abolished?
