How does this reconcile with the current government spending untold billions on armaments,Aukus for example?I’m sure you’ve got an answer.
I’d expect over the last one or two hundred years there would have been thousands of meetings of well-intentioned people committed to getting the outcomes they were intent upon in the context of peace-keeping, millions of words spoken and written down, innumerable instances of earnest handshaking and looking man to man into each other’s eyes as the hands clasped firmly, promises made, drinks drunk in solemn toasts to expectations of their man’o man’o meet-fests catalysing peace on earth and goodwill to all men. Nothing unsurprising here. That’s what we do. Beat the crap out of each other, feel sorry for our behaviour, promised never to do it again, and move on. Until we do it again. Rinse and repeat, as it were.
It’s a much better look to have peace initiatives and aid programs than actively proselytise for conflict. The worm in the apple, unfortunately, is that it doesn’t always seem to work. We humans being what we are, there’s always another psychopath or slumbering lunatic waiting around the corner for his chance to grab the reins and by virtue of that the means to prosecute his fever dreams of aggressive score-settling or whatever rationalised motives he may give for marching off to war for the millionth time.
Not to have a crack at the author of the essay, but Global Demilitarisation has got to be a joke, yes?, or at least a sly oxymoron, given the huuuggge slice of the global economic pie occupied by the global armaments industries; a slice that given their ugly gluttony they’re not about to rescind any time soon.

An interestng article with lot’s of good clear examples of how this world could be drastically improved by stopping war and all other types of violence. I have lived long enough and seen enough of this world to know that the biggest issue with this is us. Sadly I don’t think our species is capable of living in peace, or of saving itself. It is not just the warmongers, we are inherently flawed wanting more than others and willing to hurt and kill to take what we want. Our pride and greed our some of our biggest faults. This world has become a lot angrier and much more aggressive than when I was a lad growing up in country Australia. Our population, and the world’s, has almost tripled since I was born and it is only going to get worse as our population keeps increasing. Dwindling resources for more people to fight over, things are only going to get worse unless we humans drastically change ourselves in to something better than we are now. Future generation need to get us back on track with what is truly important, saving our only home and saving ourselves rather than continue to slaughter each other over our petty differences. I don’t consider Australia a good example of peace and world demilitarisation while they allow the Yanks and others to arm our country with their weapons of chaos and death and make us more of a target for other nations apposed to the west. New Zealand should be applauded for their stance against any foreign military presence in their country. I have no faith in our government anymore, no matter which party is in power they still pander to the Septic Tank fascist regime. Will we never learn…..
Canguro, I doubt that we’ll ever see global demilitarisation, but it’s possible that we could see global nuclear disarmament.
At some point in the future the majority of the world’s population will see that the possession of nuclear weapons has a corrosive effect on the judgement and moral standards of those who have them.
We see that happening in the increasing frequency of US political figures calling for nuclear strikes to solve problems caused by the failure of US diplomacy.
The longer nuclear weapons exist, the more likely it is that they will be used.
The hard power of the US is waning. Once that process is complete their soft power will disappear also and we might see moves towards a more sane world.

Oz may be circumstantially well placed. It’s a very tall order but must be pursued. But it’s not just ‘ballistics’ war, it may be more significantly be hearts and minds against supremacy in unfettered commerce.
Since about 1950 to now the world population has gone from 2 billion to 8 billion – mainly due to agricultural tech.
Ironically, at the same time the fertility rate has plummeted from about 5.0 to 2.7 births per woman.
Quite possibly the plunge in human fertility could be due largely to the ultra-toxic effects of nitrogenous and phosphate fertilizers
Oh, and one might add to that the affects of ‘advanced’ chemicals derived from fossil-fuels (esp oil & coal).
I don’t have figures on the rampaging of human genetic and mental ailments.

It’s interesting to contemplate that the great thievery and conquest of imperialism kicked off in the late 1400s and reached it’s insane competitive peak and backlash via the industrial revolution, into the 20th century. Yet, the blights of the industrial revolution and unfettered commerce have accelerated the path to destruction since, with the supremacists manufacturing endless ruses to cover their tracks and fill their vaults. It’s all going awry. No wonder ordinary folk are plagued with anxiety.

It’s a big communications contest; the contagion of the industry of blame and vengeance vs vigorous attendance to the root causes.
Episode four of the 2007 BBC documentary series Nuclear Secrets focuses on Israel’s development of nuclear weapons and Mordechai Vanunu’s role in revealing this program to western media, an act that earned him a prison sentence of 18 years after his kidnapping in Rome by the Israeli secret service Mossad and abduction back to Israel.
What is most shocking is the degree of conspiratorial secrecy surrounding this program. Despite nuclear non-proliferation agreements and American regulations forbidding aid to countries that were engaged in development of nuclear weapons, Israel got a free pass. America knew what they were up to, as did the French, the Germans, the Norwegians, the British; all of whom provided various degrees of support with technology and knowhow. And along the way, Israel took it upon herself to attack both Iran’s and Iraq’s nuclear facilities in a program of preemptive action designed to eliminate any potential threats from those two countries.
There should no longer be any doubt about the paranoid behaviour of this warmongering & hostile entity in regard to its relationships with neighbouring countries in the Middle East, in the context of its willingness to initiate first strikes and to kill, kill and continue killing.
