Instead of excluding homosexuals, the church should exclude homophobes

Glenn Davies, the Anglican Archbishop of Sydney and Synod president, has told homosexual people that they should abandon the church.

“My own view is that if people wish to change the doctrine of our church, they should start a new church or join a church more aligned to their views – but do not ruin the Anglican Church by abandoning the plain teaching of Scripture. Please leave us.

“We have far too much work to do in evangelising Australia to be distracted by the constant pressure to change our doctrine in order to satisfy the lusts and pleasures of the world.”

Change our doctrine? Here’s some “plain teaching of Scripture” for you Glenn.

James 4:11-12

“Do not speak evil against one another, brothers. The one who speaks against a brother or judges his brother, speaks evil against the law and judges the law. But if you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law but a judge. There is only one lawgiver and judge, he who is able to save and to destroy. But who are you to judge your neighbour?”

Romans 14:1-13

“As for the one who is weak in faith, welcome him, but not to quarrel over opinions. One person believes he may eat anything, while the weak person eats only vegetables. Let not the one who eats despise the one who abstains, and let not the one who abstains pass judgment on the one who eats, for God has welcomed him. Who are you to pass judgment on the servant of another? It is before his own master that he stands or falls. And he will be upheld, for the Lord is able to make him stand.”

Titus 3:2-7

“To speak evil of no one, to avoid quarreling, to be gentle, and to show perfect courtesy toward all people. For we ourselves were once foolish, disobedient, led astray, slaves to various passions and pleasures, passing our days in malice and envy, hated by others and hating one another. But when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, …”

Colossians 3:12-15

“Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful.”

Matthew 25:41-46

“Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me. They also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?’ He will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’ Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.”

In speaking about homosexuals, the Catechism of the Catholic Church says “They must be accepted with respect, compassion, and sensitivity. Every sign of unjust discrimination in their regard should be avoided.”

Davies and his ilk, by passing judgement and seeking to exclude people, are the ones who are going against the doctrine of the church. Perhaps the homophobes might like to form their own church because they sure as hell do not represent the teachings of Christ.

There are so many religious superstitions, with sub sects of hundreds and vague offshoots and dissenters making even more, when it is all ridiculous, for there is no god, ivory, wood, metal, painted, sculpted, imagined, not in Rome, Mecca, Delhi, Beijing, Wall at. Canterbury, Las Vegas, Anywhere. Get your god to appear in person before any tribunal or high court..? The perpetual lying, abuse, power surges, inflated salvationist righteousness is evil filth. Too many crooks and cranks claim supremacy and inner vision from all this rubbish. Liars and cheats abound in it, science is denied, truth is suppressed, No-one actually knows of the truth of existence of many figures, let alone what they said, thought, meant, taught. Conventional social and cutural thinking is that we might learn from some in matters of ethics, morals, behaviour, and, that is a fine guide, but voluntary. But everyday supremacist lying and exclusivist claims are evil and one day must go, forever. No forward thinking decent democratic society needs the repression of extreme superstition . To think that what I’ve expressed is a basis for murder threats by some savage is awful enough.

The arrogance! The conceit! The hide of this horrible thing. Shame on him and all those who blindly follow.

Exactly why is homosexuality godless in the Archbishop’s view?

Just because of some utterances in the Old Testament (the Torah)? How valid is that today?

Because they don’t breed? I thought this would be a blessing in this day and age. Besides many gay couples take the children hetero couples don’t want.

Because they have anal sex? If this is the case, then you would be excluding a lot more ‘heterosexual’ couples who also do this.

Hmmm, nope its just a culture war being waged by people who enable paedophilia.

“Instead of excluding homosexuals, we should be excluding Archbishops” and clergy and churches receiving taxation concessions and relief on the enormous real estate holdings and charity status while removing government funding from private church schools better described as providing third rate child care masquerading as an education system.

Believe any fairy tales you want, but do NOT expect the government representing ALL the citizens of the country to pay for your pleasures.

It’s interesting that he is too busy “evangelising Australia” to worry about ‘sinners’. He just wants them to piss off while he gets on with converting the ‘right’ people.

Why am I reminded of Keith Wright: A Queensland politician who railed against Paedophiles ?

  7. Aortic

If he included heterosexual philanderers, flirters and those who, of both sexes secretly lust after others he would be preaching to empty pews.

  8. whatever

Considering the very campy outfit Glenn Davies is wearing, why is he ‘throwing stones’?

What leaves me dumbfounded is that these religious hypocrites accept modern knowledge about so many things which conflict with biblical records yet on issues around sex they fall back on the Bible.
According to scripture, when Jesus came upon a group preparing to stone a woman to death for adultery – Sharia law still recognised by some Muslims – his response is recorded as “let he among you who is without sin cast the first stone “. Was he not updating the law?

    Mark 2:16-17

And the scribes of the Pharisees, when they saw that he was eating with sinners and tax collectors, said to his disciples, “Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners?” And when Jesus heard it, he said to them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. I came not to call the righteous, but sinners.”

    Ephesians 2:8-9

For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.

    I love a nuanced approach.

So much hot air from both religious fundies and irrascible Dawkisites.

  12. whatever

Anglican priest Graeme Lawrence sentenced to 8 years for raping 15 year old boy.
Looks like Davies was trying to create a diversion for this news that he probably knew would unfold today.

  13. Lambchop Simnel

It is a good theory. The bloody cheek, if so.

As the header suggested you may as well sanction the phobes if you censure the gays, on the basis of “judge not lest ye be judged”.

People need to get back to live and let live.

I think the Archbishop has a point: when Henry disagreed with the church of Rome he started his own church. Then he murdered anyone who did not accept the new church. Is this what the archbishop is seeking? He should be careful what he asks for, god moves in mysterious ways

Thousands of paragraphs filling thousands of books of nonsensical piffle, about a fake man/women in the sky. It’s simple really, anyone believing in this nonsense, should be in a straight jacket. The medical fraternity is failing here in their duty of care to the people that are supposedly sane. There should be a test in the womb for any human that has a possible interest in any of the religion’s and they should be chemically castrated so they can’t contaminate the human race. I am just joking about castration they should just find an island to put them all on. There they can fall prostrate on the ground in each other’s honour , speak in tongues and turn water into wine and turn bananas into donuts until the fcking cows come home.
