Labour unions must be empowered to advocate for workers, regulatory bodies must remain independent to enforce accountability, policing must serve the public and not political interests, and the military must defend Australia’s sovereignty without succumbing to foreign control.

Addressing conflicts of interest within unions is critical to ensuring that their leadership stays focused on workers’ rights and does not pursue personal political ambitions at the cost of their members. By enacting these reforms, Australia can ensure these institutions work for the public good and continue to safeguard the nation.

  1. For what it is worth, I think the ex-union leaders, Bob Hawke, Julia Gillard, and Bill Shorten all showed the highest level of negotiatiating skills, and willingness to lead by consensus. I think this is related to their life experience of bring opposing groups together and finding fair and just solutions. Other leaders operate far more dictatorially.

  2. Individual citizens can only contribute to support institutions and the future, if they are informed well?

    However, Australians are simply not informed by our RW MSM cartel and now colonising social media through like minded inlfuencers, to have us focus on sfot issues and avoid the hard (like Kim Williams complains about ABC News, whose reporters seem to have all stood back or down from using X, to allow RW misinformation to take over….).

    Like Brexit, if you asked a Brexiter to explain what was wriong before the EU Referendum, and since what have been the beneficial outcomes? Response, like on climate science, is blank faces or anger….

    French philospher Albert Camus, post WWII, had an idea of an after noon newspaper that rebutted and countered morning BS from the RW MSM, and include issues or policies that had been avoided.

    In Australia it’s now diifficult to follow anything with our RW MSM & influencer cartel, plus neo-narcissism where everyone has on opinion, on issues that don;t matter, because the media does not methodically all issues, even if important; climate sciecne and related the most egregious.

    Ex-union Bob Hawke? Fair? Just?

    The historical evidence reveals him to be boss’s man in union clothing. An opportunist of the mass rejection of the anti-Fraser/Howard regime he unfairly helped himself to the Prime Ministership, not because he had done anything to deserve it, but because, we were repeatedly told, he was destined to be PM. He then set Australia on an extreme lurch to the right, eagerly following the examples of Reagan and Thatcher. The only people who regard those examples as fair and just are those who believe in born to rule privileges. Core Public institutions like the Commonwealth Bank were privatised depriving the public of an alternative to private banks as well as the ability to hold those private banks to account through competition with them. He failed to impose the deeply unpopular compulsory ID card on citizens, and failed to establish a consumption tax (GST) as a tax reform, but succeeded in initiating the push to individual enterprise bargaining to undermine unionism. His environmental policies were so appalling that he lost that movement’s support altogether and the Greens Party had to be created to give environmentalists some one to vote for.

    He was a man of the people who preferred the company of the rich and powerful, he set the stage for all the unfairness and injustices of the subsequent Coalition governments of John Howard. Why else do you suppose the private sector praises him so much?

    No way could you regard him as a protector of Core Public Institutions, not even the unions. Yet he is mythologised as a working class hero and lauded as a champion of Consensus (with a capital C meaning in reality concession of core public interests).

    But it always seems that when it comes to a choice between historical accuracy and mythology, Australians can always be relied upon to opt for mythology.

  4. It shows just how fractured our politics in Australia have become. In recent days Australia has joined with the United Nations, United States, Canada, European Union, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, Qatar, New Zealand and others for an immediate 21 day ceasefire across the Lebanon-Israel border’ to provide space for diplomacy towards the conclusion of a diplomatic settlement consistent with UNSCR 1701, and the implementation of UNSCR 2735 regarding a ceasefire in Gaza and release of hostages.

    The outlier believe it or not is the Liberal National Party coalition who refused to endorse the condolence message delivered by Albanese on October 7 because it called for a ceasefire in Gaza and Lebanon. Dutton said that now is not the time to call for a ceasefire. It’s not because he doesn’t agree that a ceasefire is the right thing, it is because he cannot see himself agreeing with anything that the ALP government – or the rest of the world and our major allies – support.

    The US are calling on all parties, including the Governments of Israel and Lebanon, to endorse the temporary ceasefire immediately consistent with UNSCR 1701 during this period, and to give a real chance to a diplomatic settlement.

    When questioned on this Senator James Paterson acknowledged that the coalition are at odds with the UN, the US and other major allies. In particular Paterson linked this departure from solidarity with the US to political belief systems, he said to David Speers on Insiders :

    PATERSON: Well, David, it wouldn’t be remarkable for an Australian politician to disagree with an American politician, particularly as the United States administration under President Biden and Vice President Harris is a centre left administration. I am from a centre right political party. There will be times that we disagree and mature adults can be open and honest that, I think that is unremarkable.

    So, when it comes down to a call for a ceasefire, Senator Paterson sees it all in Right and Left political bias AND the rest of the coalition go along with that like sheep – no independent or pragmatic thinking anywhere to be seen.

    And this mob are seen as an alternative government ??

  5. So. Patterson, an Adolf Youth type, remains an indoctrinated ex-IPA bonebrained under educated mouth, unfit for civilised attitudes and public duty. He sees things in politically dogmatic ungenerously brownshirt slanted ways, a Der Sturmer attitude and self centred in righteous ignorance. Too many right wing types are triumphal, exclusivist, supremacist, whiteywonder over-ripe kiddies only.

  6. “I am from a centre right political party.” Sure he is, according to Wikipedia he’s, “Paterson is aligned with the national right faction of the Liberal Party.[17][18] Coming from the IPA where he was a fellow, Paterson has been associated with Libertarian elements of Liberal Party…” So it’s, what else is new with the Libs, utter bullshit. With Der Reichspud in charge they are anything but centre-right.
