    Dreams based on serious work and conscientious effort count; but futility glares at this with eternal winning records, for, have the people ever done well politically except by violence, extreme, short term? Only accurate, vicious, godlike, unexpected, miraculous assassination and liquidation would work. From the Gracchi to Robespierre to Lenin and Castro, a short term dream has led to agonies. We’ll never win and beat the filth, so, start pissing on Everest to remove it and get a flat peoples’ park…I’d like to remove, say, one hundred prominent inflated human arseholes tomorrow, but would it do any good? There is always such a huge queue, awaiting that minute’s fame, elevation, destiny.

    Denis, “Devolving decision-making authority to local governments, allowing communities to address their unique challenges directly.” What I have seen in Western Australia, the Local Government is a victory for the minority. Championed by membership to W.A.L.G.A and granted special exemptions by our State Government, this private “not for profit” organisation (emboldened by A.L.G.A) is largely removed from C.C.C powers. Local Government is perceived as the building blocks of secrecy, corruption and systemic failure serving the interests of this minority. Even local voting methods and authenticity is strongly questioned. Interesting article, however epistemological and semantic nightmare it has become.

    Watchdog, that’s a good point about corruption at the local level, in fact it’s a crucial and vital point, but that’s not an argument against “Devolving decision-making authority to local governments, allowing communities to address their unique challenges directly.”

    It has to be kept in mind that corruption is a feature of bureaucracies everywhere, irrespective of size, social context, political ideology, function or purpose.

    More power at the local level is a positive move, but the granting of power is only sustainable alongside a comprehensive anti-corruption framework.

    Where I lived a few years back, council meetings were poorly attended, and I think they liked it that way.
    I used to sit quietly, and not only listen to the proceedings, but watch the body language of the Councillors and city staff.
    You get to see who is on the Mayors team, and who may be there to actually try to move things to improve life for the rate payers.
    Looking at the way the individuals graduated, it was certainly a training ground for more lucrative posts in many cases.

    Local government, by & large, is a studied exercise in party-political cronyism, mates looking after mates, exemplified by ‘you scratch my back, and I’ll scratch yours.’ The Chinese have a term for it, Guanxi.

    Everyone has their bent, and all are corruptible, it’s a feature of us. Whether corruption is taken up, depends upon what is at stake, the terms, and whether the residuals bring us pleasure or an increase in self-righteousness.

    There’s no hiding from it, it will seek us all out. Perhaps there’s only the avoidance of secrecy?
