Login here Register hereA review of Australia’s future education system should include compulsory university entrance examinations following successful year 12 completion in order to test the suitability of applicants to university courses. Also course content must be designed to be meaningful and productive towards the development of future careers. Existing HECS fee accounts should be forgiven and future HECS fee collections be abandoned.
The review should also encourage students revealed as unsuitable for university academic education to be directed towards an expanded TAFE system which is dedicated to accredited apprenticeship training. Places in tertiary and TAFE training should favour Australian citizens over foreign national students.
Peter Gumley, I agree with most of what you say. However, I disagree with the compulsory, and successful year 12 completion. I left school in 1956 at age 15. I failed grade 8. I worked in my trade for about 40-years. During my apprenticeship, I received honour, and credit passes for all my exams. When I decided to go to university at age 55, I applied via Recognition of prior learning. I got my first preference and ended up with a grade point average of 5.3.
What? Fully fund our own citizens? Increase our professional worker base? Increase our countrywide wealth and prosperity? Leave the unqualified jobs to the people who need a job without qualifications instead of those jobs being taken by potential doctors, teachers, lawyers, researchers, vets, architects?
What a silly idea!

Nah! Let’s just import nurses and doctors during the next pandemic!
I think we should move beyond the debate about whether or not to abolish HECS, we seem to focus the discussion on endless public funding, as the only option.
The fact is, there is an endless list of legitimate proposals to increase government funding for programs, groups and demographics.
Public resources are limited, and I’m not sure tertiary students are top of the list, or more deserving than old aged pensioners, or even a higher priority than increasing rates of pay for teachers and health workers.
I’d suggest that we abolish the HECS system and the option of paying fees in advance by domestic students.
The payment in advance option significantly advantages children of high income parents and is genuinely inequitable. It simply shouldn’t be an option.
Replace HECS and pay as you go fees with a graduate tax. The tax applies for as long as a graduate earns an income.
It should be permanent tax, where graduates have the sense that they are assisting to fund their successors.
Perhaps something in the order of 0.5% of income for each year of tertiary education, (for all income above the current HECS kick in level)
I’m also tempted to address the question of currency sovereignty, but I’ll resist this for now
