For Once I Agree With Cory Bernardi – You Should Too!

The other day Jacqui Lambie suggested that Senator Corey Bernardi’s behaviour was like “an angry prostitute lecturing us about the benefits of celibacy”. Ok, she did immediately suggest that her comment was a little over the top and that if she offended any sex workers she was sorry.

But Senator Bernardi was quick to respond. He chimed in, telling us:

“There’s an inherent dignity in being a Senator. I just don’t think that Jacqui Lambie has demonstrated that. I just think she’s too thick to pay any real attention to, that’s my view. I choose to ignore her.”

Well, I’m certainly not going to respond to Senator Bernardi because there’s an inherent dignity in being a writer and I certainly won’t be paying any attention to Cory, no sir, I choose to ignore him.

And I’m certainly choosing to ignore what Bernardi said when Bill Shorten called him a homophobe last year:

“What I’m critical of is that those of a differing opinion, do not engage in the merits or the facts or otherwise of the debate. What they (Labor) resort to is name calling.”

Reminding people of that quote would be like asking why it was ok for Liberals to take gifts of “fake” Rolex watches from a Chinese company because they were only worth about $400 each, but Dastyari has done the unthinkable by allowing a company to pay a debt for him.

Now, I suppose that some of you pedants out there are suggesting that by actually making him the subject of this piece, then I’m not ignoring him, but, hey, that’s like saying that if they didn’t keep reporting what Islamic State tells us then some of those who’ve been recruited wouldn’t even know that they existed. That’s an awful thing to say. It’s probably true, but it’s still an awful thing to say.

So if you’re suggesting that I can’t say that I’m not ignoring Bernardi by writing about him, then next you’ll be telling me that old Cory himself wasn’t actually choosing to ignore Senator Lambie when he told us that she was just “too thick to pay any attention to”!

But I’m pleased that Senator Bernardi has now decided that he shouldn’t pay attention to people with limited intelligence. Of course, it’ll mean an end to the Coalition, once the Nationals realise that Bernardi thinks that they should just be ignored…

Oh wait, if they haven’t realised by now that the Liberals never pay any attention to them, then even a Liberal senator spelling it out won’t make any difference.

Anyway, I was going to tell you about what Bernardi said that I found myself nodding and saying, “Yep, got that in one.”

Surprisingly, it wasn’t about changes to the racial vilification act… In spite of how much I’m looking forward to get stuck into Andrew Bolt’s Dutch heritage and, Bernardi, that’s a pretty foreign sounding name, I mean, if they don’t like Australia, why don’t they go back to wherever they came from. Or where their parents came from. Or anywhere really… Once Bernardi gets his way, I intend to join Reclaim Australia and tell them all that they’re too foreign to be a part of the movement and that they’re no longer allowed to attend any of our rallies.

And no, it wasn’t even about his little rant on Sky News where he claimed to be “prescient”, before demonstrating his loyalty to Mr Turnbull by telling us:

“If you’re talking about me derailing government ideas, nothing derails a government idea like losing a vote in the House of Representatives for the first time in 40 or 50 years. I’m not going to suspend what’s important to the Liberal Party in favour of those people who can’t even control the Liberal Party in the lower house.”

No, it was when he said that this was like an episode of “dumb and dumber”.

Yes, I thought, I have to agree with you there.

Except, to be fair, I haven’t actually seen the movie, so I’m agreeing with him just because he’s a senator and he has a certain dignity, so he must be right.

Although he did say “episode” which sort of suggests that it was a TV show, not a movie, so maybe I’m wrong about that too, because Bernardi’s a senator and prescient and much smarter than Jacqui Lambie.

And I don’t say that he must be right just because he’s a man. That would be sexist and even Cory isn’t asking to repeal the sexual disrimination act. At least, I don’t think that he is. He’s more concerned with something that ruins the quality of life for all of us: 18C stopping us intimidating, humiliating and insulting people.

Ok, the people who are intimidated, humiliated or insulted may not understand that this is actually helping them by protecting freedom of speech, but then people like that are the sort of people who don’t understand our way of life anyway.

Yep, “Dumb and Dumber”. I can’t wait for the next episode…
