Aggression in the animal kingdom serves functional purposes tied to survival. Whether it’s territorial disputes, dominance struggles, or competition for resources, animal aggression is situational and instinctive, often resolving conflicts with minimal harm. Examples include:

1. Territorial Conflicts
Lions, wolves, and birds defend their territories to secure food, shelter, and breeding grounds. For example, lions may fight off rival males to protect their pride and offspring.

2. Infanticide and Siblicide
In resource-scarce environments, species such as chimpanzees and eagles engage in behaviours like infanticide and siblicide to ensure the survival of the strongest offspring.

3. Cannibalism and Resource Scarcity
Rodents and insects’ resort to cannibalism during extreme stress or overcrowding, reducing competition and ensuring population control.
While these behaviours may appear brutal, they are rooted in evolutionary needs and typically lack the intentionality and ideological justifications seen in human violence.

Human Aggression: Beyond Survival

Human aggression, unlike animal aggression, often arises from abstract motivations, such as ideology, power, or resource control. This has led to conflicts with far-reaching and catastrophic consequences.

1. Genocides

Genocide is the deliberate and systematic extermination of a group of people, often motivated by ethnic, religious, or political differences. The human ability for genocide is unparalleled in the natural world and is among the most devastating expressions of aggression.

Historical Examples:

The Holocaust:
Six million Jews were systematically murdered during World War II, driven by the Nazi ideology of racial purity.

The Rwandan Genocide: In 1994, over 800,000 Tutsi were killed in a span of 100 days, fuelled by ethnic tensions and political propaganda.

Ongoing Example – The Palestinian Genocide:

The plight of the Palestinian people reflects an ongoing genocide marked by systematic displacement, destruction of homes, and suppression of rights.

Land Displacement: Over decades, Palestinian territories have been reduced through illegal settlements and annexations.

Violence and Suppression: Airstrikes, blockades, and military interventions disproportionately target civilian populations, with thousands killed and injured, including children.

Global Indifference: Despite international outcry, many governments are still complicit or silent, driven by geopolitical alliances and economic interests.

Human aggression is unique in its ability for premeditation and strategy. Wars, genocides, and systemic oppression often involve months or years of planning.

Example: The ongoing occupation of Palestinian territories is not a spontaneous conflict but a carefully orchestrated campaign involving political policies, military actions, and economic restrictions.

2. Ideological Justifications
Humans use ideologies to rationalize violence, often dehumanizing their victims to justify aggression. This is clear in:

Religious Extremism:
The Crusades and modern conflicts have been framed as divine mandates.

Nationalism and Racism: Genocides, including the persecution of Palestinians, are often justified through nationalistic or ethnocentric rhetoric.

    If you are looking to learn from nature you need to know that the term indigenous is meant to indicate where a species originated.

    All Homo sapiens, the only species of humans that still exist, originated in Africa. There is no such thing as an indigenous Australian. If there was you might expect them to lack a placenta and be obliged to raise their young in a pouch. But never mind, what harm can promoting a bit of misinformation do?

    It is also important5 to properly understand the nature of the territorial imperative that exists throughout the Animal Kingdom. A wagtail will aggressively defend its territory against all comers, until a stronger wagtail comes along and drives it away. Concession to the stronger combatant is as natural as aggression and defence, as failure to concede results in death or life threatening injury. There are contests to the death in nature but concession is far more prevalent. Imagine the damage that one stag could do to another with its antlers if it tried to charge into its flanks. Instead the weaker stag in a contest of butting heads quickly concedes to the stronger, who takes over its territory and its harem of does. In nature there is no ownership of nor entitlement to territory, just an instinctive territorial imperative to defend whatever space is currently occupied.

    TNature doesn’t care about “victims”. The victors are naturally selected to survive at the expense of the losers. There are no strategies to promote coexistence. Coexistence too is just a product of natural selection, not of any deliberate intent. To minimise conflict members of a species may mark their territory that serves to warn competitors to stay away. If competitors do come into contact they may resort to contests of display or vocalising to resolve the conflict before it eventuates. Howler monkeys can deter their competitors even if they are miles and miles away such is the power of their howling.

    What we learn from nature is that competition for limited resources leads to conflict. So, how do we overcome not just our need to compete but everyone else’s as well? We may have everything sorted, but others may be in desperate need of what we have. There are more people on the planet now than there are resources to satisfy all of their needs let alone their desires. To meet the demand humans have already recklessly destroyed species and habitat to the point of irreversible ecological collapse and inevitable mass extinction, just to make room for more people to compete over what is left. There are things that could be done about it but they aren’t being done and they won’t be done. The consequence of our failure to look after the planet is that eventually nature will set a restart, without us and our current bickering over territory and resources won’t even be a memory. Our species is in the process of being naturally de-selected.

    In a recent essay, James Fell said that greed (which is, after all, the main motivation driving oligarchs and their minions) is a evolutionary survival trait. His argument is, while unpleasant, logical. We may like to think of ourselves as enlightened beyond our base animal instincts but, especially when considered as groups rather than individuals, that idea is not sustainable.

    Good article. What it seems to point to is that the human species is no better than animals, (which I whole heartedly agree with), in fact far worse in our behaviour because we know what we are doing to each other and don’t seem to care as long as it benefits our own and fuck the rest. Greed, lust for power and wealth, killing as a sport, etc. It never stops!

    Israel as currently showing us there are no depths humans will go to if they are religiously brainwashed and gullible enough. It sometimes appears to me that our species is de-evolving rather than advancing forward. If there is such a being called a god responsible for us he/she/it must we wondering where they went wrong in the human design. Clearly we are faulty but we shrug it off when we mess up with sayings like ‘to err is human’. We still have a long way to go..

If Pavlov was right, only a third of us are truly above the species but that means we fight against the 2/3rds that wants to take us out. Education was an attempt ot even out the numbers, that worked out well…..

    Ironically, JC was suposedly brought down on this world to rid us of this “original sin”, our base instincts.
    That worked out well…….a good intent only made the tribe bigger and more agressive. Yes, the god experiment has gone haywire……the only answer i have is 42.
