Politicians shouldn't tell lies, says Tony (image from melbournedailystar.com)

I don’t like listening to Tony Abbott at the best of times, but sometimes he comes out with some absolute gems of stupidity that can’t be ignored. At other times he astounds me with his penchant for hypocrisy, and of course there are his litany of regular lies that are nothing less than jaw dropping.

And just when we think we’ve heard everything up pops this little gem from a speech he made in 2004 to the Young Liberals:

Politicians shouldn’t tell lies. But some information (about private conversations and private lives, national security and Cabinet discussions, for instance) is necessarily confidential no matter how much journalists (and possibly their readers) might like to know. Governments shouldn’t break promises but if circumstances change in ways that make keeping a commitment wrong, a full explanation should be given to the electorate.

Definitely a man of his word, isn’t he?

Anomander – Sydney, Australia – I grew-up in a working class family, in a working class suburb and always like barracking for the underdog. I've done a variety of different jobs over the years from tradesman to office pleb to IT support to policeman to project management and IT development/management. I love science and abhor ignorance. I'm an avowed atheist but am intrigued by the concept of mysticism. I'm largely optimistic and somewhat naive, but can often become deeply depressed and very cynical, when I look at the state of humanity and how we are screwing our world and ourselves. As the years progress I find myself becoming more and more left-wing, more likely to champion progressive values, to value people more than the pursuit of money, to fight and protect those who can't protect themselves against forces who would see our world, our people, and resources turned into mere commodities. As an aside, my passion is board games - playing, interacting, the puzzle, the pattern - stretching your mind. I even love designing board games - not that I'm very good, but I do delight in the challenge and in the creative, problem-solving exercise.

Tony was being very honest: he was explaining that he is a very honest man, except…..when he isn’t.

Can’t be clearer than that now, can he?

The guy just wings his dogmatism and theocratic nonsense by putting together sentences that have no connective structure and leaves most people bemused thinking he must have, at least, said something meaningful even though it is logically indefensible.

I used to think that George Bush senior was a few snags short of a barbie, but Abbot does not even make the bbq! And as for his facial expression–I dare not call it a smile–he looks like a deranged idiot, & funnily enough, I (& probably thousands more of us!), think so too!
