Tony Abbott: I make this pledge to you, the Australian people

The following is an excerpt from Tony Abbott’s 2013 election campaign launch speech with an interactive report card on how he is going so far.  Click on the links to read further.

“This election is about making a great country even better; and that starts with changing [to] the worst government in our history.

I will spend the next two weeks reassuring people that there is a better way while Mr Rudd will spend the next two weeks trying to scare you about what might happen if he doesn’t keep his job.

Mr Rudd thinks this election is all about him.

Well, it’s not about him and it’s not about me.

It’s about you and how a better government can help your family and make your job more secure.

We know that a stronger economy is not about picking winners but about helping everyone to get ahead.

I want our workers to be the best paid in the world and for that to happen, we have to be amongst the most productive in the world.

From day one, it will be obvious that Australia is under new management and once more open for business.

The Clean Energy Finance Corporation will cease making non-commercial loans with taxpayers’ money.

And the motor industry will be saved from Mr Rudd’s $1.8 billion tax on company cars.

Within one hundred days, the Australian Building and Construction Commission will be running again, and the true state of Labor’s books will be revealed.

The NBN will have a new business plan to ensure that every household gains five times current broadband speeds – within three years and without digging up almost every street in Australia – for $60 billion less than Labor.

By the end of a Coalition government’s first term, the budget will be on-track to a believable surplus.

The WestConnex in Sydney, the East West Link in Melbourne, the Gateway Upgrade here in Brisbane, the North South Road in Adelaide, and the Swan Bypass in Perth will be well and truly underway.

A standing Green Army, rising to be 15,000 strong, will be working with councils, farmers and volunteers to clean up our polluted waterways and restore our degraded bush.

And the National Disability Insurance Scheme will be operating in large parts of every state.

We’ll trim the commonwealth public sector payroll by 12,000 through natural attrition

And we won’t increase the humanitarian migrant intake until such time as it’s no longer being filled by people smugglers.

There will be no new spending under a Coalition government that’s not fully-costed and fully-funded.

By the end of a Coalition government’s first term, working with the states, teacher standards will be rising and teaching programmes will be improving.

People who are capable of working will be working, preferably for a wage but if not, for the dole.

And there will be a fair dinkum paid parental leave scheme in place, because factory workers and shop assistants deserve to get their actual wage while they are on leave – just like public servants do.

We must be a country that rewards people for having a go – but we must never leave anyone behind.

That’s why I announce today that an incoming Coalition government will finally index eligibility thresholds for the Commonwealth Seniors Health Card so that more self-funded retirees will have access to cheaper medicines.

If our vision is realised, within ten years, Australia will have lower, simpler, fairer taxes.

There will be two million more jobs, in manufacturing as well as in agriculture, services, education and a still buoyant resources sector.

We’ll have a more functional federation where the states are sovereign in their own sphere.

Public schools and hospitals will have far more freedom to be as good as their private rivals.

Childcare will be more affordable and more available to families who need more than one income and who have to cope in a 24/7 economy.

As long as I am in public life, I will continue to spend a week a year in a remote indigenous community as I’ve done over the past decade.

Because, if they’re good enough for people to live in, they should be good enough for a prime minister to stay in.

Over the next three years, should we win the election, an incoming Coalition government will do exactly what we’ve said we’ll do.

We will be a no surprises, no excuses government, because you are sick of nasty surprises and lame excuses from people that you have trusted with your future…

It’s performance, not promises, that will earn your respect; it’s actions, not words, that you are looking for.

You could trust us in opposition and you will be able to trust us in government.

You don’t expect miracles; just a government that is competent and trustworthy and a prime minister who doesn’t talk down to you.

And I’m confident that your expectations can be more than met.

An incoming Coalition cabinet will respect the limits of government as well as its potential and will never seek to divide Australian against Australian on the basis of class, gender, or where people were born.

When I look at pensioners and superannuants, I don’t see people who are a drain on the taxpayer but people who have built the country that I am lucky enough to live in.

When I look at the benefits that all Australians rightly enjoy such as Medicare and good public schools and hospitals, I don’t see “middle class welfare” but the hallmarks of a society that gives families a fair go.

After the previous Liberal and National party government gave you the four largest surpluses in our history the current government has given you the five largest deficits in our history.

But the worst deficit is not the budget deficit but the trust deficit.

This election is all about trust.

Kevin Rudd says that a Coalition government would sack nurses and teachers even though we don’t employ any…and sell schools and hospitals…even though we don’t own any.

So not only is Mr Rudd leading the most incompetent government in our history, he’s now running the most dishonest election campaign in our history.

I make this pledge to you the Australian people.

I will govern for all Australians.

I want to lift everyone’s standard of living.

I want to see wages and benefits rise in line with a growing economy.

I want to see our hospitals and schools improving as we invest the proceeds of a well-run economy into the things that really count.

I won’t let you down.

This is my pledge to you.

The one thing you know is that you can’t trust what Labor tells you.

To Labor voters wondering why your party has sold its soul to the Greens; to Green voters wondering why your party has embraced socialism over environmentalism; to independent voters wondering why your MP has sided with a bad government, to everyone who has been let down and embarrassed by the circus in Canberra:

I say: give my team a chance.

How things can change in very short time
No wonder they are determined to build the not biggest medical
Research centre in the world, for cures on dementia
Tone’s should be first in line, he sure has a bad case of it
And he thought the rest of the oldies had a case of Alzheimer’s
In this country, gee he needs to shine that cracked crystal ball
    It is definitely faulty…..

  3. Ian Joyner

I agree that elections should be about the country, but for Abbott it IS all about himself and what he can get. Take Whitehousegate, a scholarship not generally available given to Frances who thus avoids HECS. Students should boycott Whitehouse, put them out of business and tell business that it will be punished for these shady back-room deals.

The Abbotts get this money, for fashion design, while putting students of engineering, science, and the arts out of business. They deny climate change. No Abbott is just about himself, not about the country.

  4. Stephen Tardrew

Common Kaye Tony didn’t say that it was just a practice run for the real formula. Sounds like you stole this speech from some half backed right of center leftist. You are a joker Ha Ha. No one in their right mind would say that stuff and mean it after all he destroyed all written and digital copies so it was not written down. I don’t know who you stole this from.

The people more important than the debt thingy now that’s a good one.

You know you just can’t dredge up ancient history to justify the discovery of the Big Bad Debt that’s just not fair. Show some journalistic integrity like my mates at the Australian and stop making up lies about Tony’s lies as it makes you just like him.

So all up Kaye that makes you an Abbott supporter right?

My thinking faculties are going good today hey?

    Welcome to the LNP.

  5. Anomander

    More brilliant stuff Kaye.

The big lie comes up repeatedly in any kind of political discourse about the causes of the 2008 global economic meltdown. Liberals such as our small minded corporatists and free-marketeers use the lie to defend their favoured policies of cutting spending on infrastructure, healthcare, education and welfare in the name of “austerity”. The lie goes along the lines of:
We have spent too much on infrastructure, healthcare, education and welfare and has borrowed excessively to pay for it, creating the budget deficit and increasing the national debt. The only way to to reduce the deficit is to cut government spending.
The first fault in the theory is that the economic crisis and subsequent rises in government debts were not caused by excessive government borrowing, they were caused by reckless lending to speculators (punters) in the financial sector.

Probably the most famous example of “tax and spend” is Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal in the United States which resolved the post Wall Street Crash depression through policies such as; reform of the financial sector (closing the banks down entirely until they agreed to proper regulation), wealth taxes, the initiation of huge state funded infrastructure projects, a massive reduction in unemployment, large scale house building and the repeal of prohibition. These measures pulled the United States out of recession while maintaining a carefully balanced budget (until America joined the Second World War).

The problem with the short term thinking regarding large across the board cuts in government investment, is that in many cases it creates false economies, e.g, the support for the less well off and unemployed is a ‘stimulus’ that the Government actually “claws back” in taxes almost immediately. The people who receive this support spend it almost immediately in their local area. By reducing that flow, means many businesses will be hurt by the drop in cash flow.
Reducing unemployment payments by half ads up to more than
$150 million cash flow out of the top dollars of small business.
Unfortunately the Government wants to see its own numbers go down and ignore the adverse consequences of the harm they pass on to business.
In fact, studies show that increases in the minimum wage actually puts more money in the pockets of people who then spend it — resulting in more jobs and counteracting any so called negative employment effects of an increase in the minimum wage.
Researchers at the University of California at Berkeley — Arindrajit Dube, T. William Lester and Michael Reich — have compared adjacent counties and communities across the United States, some with higher minimum wages than others but similar in every other way.
They found no loss of jobs in those with the higher minimums.
The truth is, the lurch toward widening inequality can be reversed. But doing so will require bold political steps.

At the least, the rich must pay higher taxes in order to fund better-quality education for kids from poor and middle-class families. The minimum wage must be raised.
Don’t listen to the right-wing lies about inequality. Know the truth, and act on it.

Many people have ruined their lives when they could have prevented it …. simply by opening their minds. .

    Phony Abbott, 2012:

“The one thing that the Australian workers will find is that I am their best friend. What I want to see is higher wages and more jobs. That’s what I was like when I was the workplace relations minister and if the Coalition wins the next election, the workers of Australia will find that I am their best friend.”

  9. puffytmd

    Tony is a liar.
say it everywhere. write it everywhere. five simple words.

  10. puffytmd

    4 words.
or five for “Tony Abbott is a liar.”

  11. Kaye Lee

puffy this is my scratch and sniff version of doing just that. Nice pic, nice words, but scratch below the surface and I smell bullshit.

Love the dog on the blog.If you go to Canberra with KL when Labor appoints her as the Editor of their’ soon to be (?)’ paper, some friends and I will chip in to buy you a woolly coat — Aussie wool of course.

    Nice article.

“He makes these LIES to the the Australian people” – No substance, and NEVER backs up what he claims.

  14. mary mannion

Oh God.The more I read about him makes me want to vomit. We hada great country that is quickly sliding into disrepute and will gain the title”the unlucky country” with a “demented leader(sic)”.

  15. Standupuseyourvoice (@Standuseurvoice)

Brilliant article I shared it in it’s entirety on my page I love your work you have a great analytical mind I think in a similar way

  16. Stephen Tardrew

I have read the above and deny any connection with the mouth that is my mouth that said what I didn’t want to say but said because it helped put my little bitty hand into the cooky jar. Solution once in smash the bugger and a new world order will arise.

Tone and Dog become one ruling from on high on the right hand of:

“Hey Dog you look red and what the hell are you holding that fork for?”

“Welcome to your nightmare” (deep guttural voice with volcanic rumblings and flaming breath).

    Oh shit home again.

KAYE LEE, once again thanks for brilliant article, can u please tell me how March in May turned out . Haven’t seen anything on success or otherwise, did the numbers beat the other in March, hoping it was everything we all hoped for. Keep writing hubby & I r totally awake to the lying Rabbott!

  18. Paul Scahill

NuffSaid, BronB really needs to be removed, this is a very dangerous lady, Rabbott certainly picked his team – Deceitful, liars, bad people with not an ounce of integrity amongst them.
KL: thanks for links re march, appreciated, thanks. March did look successful and it does look as though Aussies r maintaining the rage.

  19. greg toland

Apart from his close Family is there anyone who can say something Nice about Him ? Probably his family would struggle as well, Your List of unfulfilled Promises is incredible, Keep working on getting him out, I have also Noticed there are none of our Right wing nut Jobs on the site anymore But what can they possibly say ?s

  20. Stephen Tardrew

That this is not plastered all over the MSN is an indication of the tread lightly into the night approach which only reacts if forced to by public opinion. There are critical voices in the media however it is not forceful enough given the treatment of Julia for much smaller infractions. There is no consistency for many journalist and timidity by others.

This document is undoubtedly a document of unmitigated falsehood and deception. One must call a spade a spade.

  21. abbienoiraude

Thank you once again Kaye for putting up the list creating a litany of lies from a most disreputable person, Australia’s PM.
Hearing/reading some non thinkers praise of the budget exposes just how self interested Abbott’s supporters are. It is shocking to know that through their ignorance we house Iin our Nation cruel and inconsiderate citizens.
Your posts on AIMN keep us informed and hopeful.

  22. Stephen Tardrew

    DanDark:

The W.A. Today article on the impact upon women deserves wide distribution. Thank you for bringing it to my attention.

  23. Kaye Lee

Stephen, the links come from the MSM so the criticism is harsh. Before the election they were fixated on scandal – leadership challenges, Slipper, Thomson, AWU slush fund, pink batts – but, considering the reaction to Victoria’s article, you can see how that is what many people want to read. We need to know these things but we also need to know the priorities of our government. We have the luxury here to write about whatever we wish. Commercial enterprises must write about what sells. If something is popular it will be picked up by other media outlets. In-depth analysis, whilst out there, is not popular.

  24. Anomander

I love their rationale they use to fool the ignorant and the stupid voters – “We can’t leave future generations to pay off all this debt”.

But of course, it’s fine to leave future generations a world where our air, water and environment have been degraded of destroyed.

Future generations will just have to cope with less services, higher unemployment, less job security, increased job casualisation, less skilled jobs available, more cheap imported workers, longer working hours, greatly diminished rights and entitlements and substantially lower rates of pay.

I just know they’ll be glad to live in a nation with sub-standard Internet connections and where the entire media sphere is controlled by one single entity, who determines what news you hear and see and wht is niot in your best interest to know.

I’m sure future generations will enjoy living in a user pays society where a US-style health care applies to the rich only where care is only available for those with insurance and the poor die in the streets for want of treatment.

They’ll no doubt understand that university education is limited only to the rich, where infrastructure and services have all been corporatised and everyone now has to pay for each time they use these resources, so these international businesses can make larger and larger profits, all of which seem to flow overseas into tax havens.

I’ll bet our children take delight that those profits no longer flow into government coffers, so Australia is now viewed as an economic backwater.and a place shunned as one of the few remaining places where they continue to burn dirty fossil fuels, in and age where everyone else is making use of clean, efficient renewables.

Those generations will definitely not be shamed that we allowed of great forests to be clear-felled for wood ships, that we fouled the Artesian Basin so we could have a sell off some gas overseas and that we willingly sat idle while the Barrier Reef was devastated by mining, pollution, numerous oil-spills, ocean temperatures and and acidification

Oh yeah, I’m certain our grandchildren will thank us for this government’s grand vision of not leaving them with a small amount of debt.

  25. Kaye Lee

Anomander, you miss the point. Tony may only have three years in which to say I reduced the debt and he doesn’t look like making it so he has to get a wriggle on. Get your priorities straight will ya. It’s all about the deficit. As ross said, what’s the point in being healthy if the economy’s not healthy? What’s the point in having sustainable practice if we aren’t making superprofits? Who needs water if we are poor?

  26. mars08

The “quick fix” is to turn the budget deficit into private debt…

  27. Kaye Lee

“Indeed, it is astonishing how little this crisis has shaken conventional wisdom. On the contrary, it is widely believed that it is safer to rely on private borrowing than on public borrowing as a source of demand. An expansion of private borrowing to buy ever more expensive houses is deemed good, but an expansion of government borrowing, to build roads or railways, is not. Privately created credit-backed money is thought sound, while government-created money is not. None of this makes much sense.”

  28. Pingback: OneTermTony’s lies, nicely summarised so far..

  29. Stephen Tardrew

    Kaye:

I completely agree. I have been heartened at the response of MSM and do realize that media is a market place. I have felt, and expressed for sometime, that the writing is on the wall for this government and it seems to be coming to fruition. I have much more faith in the decency of ordinary Australians when it comes to the crunch. The fantasy of the debt crisis is the monkey in the room that still needs to be exposed regardless of the reaction to the budget. The response to Victoria’s article also demonstrates the degree of latent anger that reflects peoples insecurities and fears. In a sense it is a diabolical situation when emotional subconscious drives dominate reason but what to do? Education is failing us if the basics of science and experimental methodology are not taught at an early age, and of course along with science comes logic, and along with logic morality. Without facts how is it possible to change peoples minds?

There is so much that is exciting about science and technology that can led to a better life for all but while inequity reigns supreme the chance of disseminating these changes throughout the populace remains problematic.

Progressive must simplify their message to make a point without people having to read reams of information. This is what conservatives are good at, short-soundbites, and we have to do the same. The thing is conservatives are so cock sure of themselves that only direct failure makes any difference and even that is likely to be blamed upon the general populace for not understanding self evident magical, mythical truths.

The fact that social sciences, political science and economics are not truly empirical sciences, and include a large does of subjective opinion, also confuses those who want to find some certainty. We need a simple set of axioms to live by based in justice, equity and utility basically because it is not right to let people suffer unnecessarily. Though many of us left the sixties behind we still carry a deep longing for a more just and equitable world where suffering is minimized and wealth fairly distributed. Heavens it seems such a long time to have waited only to be confronted by this debacle.

In a way we are a minority struggling to influence the misinformed majority and regardless we must keep keeping on. Sure we must be pragmatic however the goals are admirable and truly worth striving for.

  30. corvus boreus

A friend recently asked me how “this mob” intended to run an economy on such unsound principles. My honest answer was that I didn’t think they intended to run it, but to cannibalise it.
Unfortunately the lie of the “debt crisis” has been swallowed unnoticed amongst the multitude of falsehoods presented to justify the budget. My worst domestic concern is what these increasingly erratic and desperate radicals will do as the next election approaches. They will will both seek to foster further corporate obligation for their post-political careers, and enact socially deforming reforms to suit their bitter punitive ideology.
Mass bonfires of protective legislation, crazy firesales of public infrastructure, and ill-thought amendments for narrow lobby interests are all betrayals of any virtues in conservative philosophy and it is a bitter pill that these “grubs” will likely never receive the legal or social retribution they deserve.
My only consolation is the thought of a karmic bitchslap upon them all.

  31. Gillian

Well said Kaye – your articles are THE best – I love reading your stuff!! Phony Tony is a liar and unfit to be leading what was our wonderful country!! we need to get rid of him!!
