The art of life

Some of The AIMN’s readers are amazing people, each with an amazing story.

Take Peter Conroy, for example.

Peter is an emerging artist, having just graduated in 2015 from SCA with a Masters in Fine Art. He is a satirical cartoonist working in oils and inks and is trying to cut his teeth as an artist/illustrator.

Peter is currently working on a project that looks at the cost ‘exponential economic growth’ is having on our society, and highlights instances of unethical practices that the companies we use daily have resorted to, all for that extra buck. Whereas most political cartoons are either right or left wing, pro this or anti that, Peter’s cartoons try to focus on social injustices we can hopefully all unite in support of, or alternatively, unite in opposition of (such as clothing companies using sweat shop labour or giant corporations avoiding their tax obligations etc).

“What’s so amazing about that?” you might ask.

Peter broke his neck three years ago surfing in Bondi and became paralysed from the chest down.

With some help from a charity called Accessible Arts he enrolled in uni to sharpen his artistic skills and has been rewarded with an exhibition of his work at the Bondi Pavilions art gallery on the 15th-26th June.

This will be the first exhibition of his art and his first attempt to venture into the role of an illustrator, continuing his work mainly dealing with social and political issues.

Here is a link to Peter’s website and also to the upcoming exhibition’s Facebook page.
