Political correctness is not stopping silly people from telling lies

Freedom of speech should not confer the right to tell blatant lies but, time and again, that is what we see happening.

That bastion of bigotry and bullshit, Miranda Devine, informed us last year that Cheltenham Girls High School had banned the use of gender specific terms like “girls”, “women” or “ladies” and that teachers were told “that if they did not support decisions of LGBTI students they would be breaking the law, would be considered homophobic and were not welcome by the school.”

The story was a lie.

Every year we hear that Christmas carols have been banned and every year it is shown to be another lie.

The Coalition for Marriage aired an ad where mother Cella White, an avid campaigner against the Safe Schools program, tells viewers that her son’s school told him, “… he could wear a dress next year if he felt like it.”

Except it never happened.

Neo-Nazi group Antipodean Resistance distributed a poster that claims, “gay marriage enables paedophilia” and “gay couples are thirty times more likely to molest children.”

Total crap again. According to the American Psychological Association and multiple studies children are no more likely to be molested by LGBTI parents, than by male-female parents.

Another poster that appeared in Melbourne with the charming headline “Stop the Fags” claimed that 92% of children raised by gay parents are abused, that 51% have depression, and that 72% are obese.

These claims are refuted in a review by Columbia Law School earlier this year which looked at 79 different studies into the wellbeing of children with gay or lesbian parents. That study, the most comprehensive of its kind, found kids with LGBTI parents do as well as other children emotionally, physically, educationally and socially.

In Hurstville in Sydney, an anti same-sex marriage flyer printed in both English and Chinese claims that “the number of victims being raped in public female changing rooms and bathroom in those countries that has passed the same sex marriage legislation is a stunning fact to all!”

This, of course, is completely fictitious.

Last year, the Marriage Alliance created an ad that showed a troubled looking office worker with a rainbow noose around her neck.

“Same sex marriage increases PC bullying in the workplace,” said the ad which was banned for being extreme and an unjustifiable depiction of violence.

An email from the Marriage Alliance’s Sophie York has accused the ‘yes’ campaign of bullying and threatening “to destroy our entire Aussie way of life.”

Seriously!

This debate has nothing to do with freedom of speech or political correctness. It is about a bunch of silly people telling big fat lies.

My worst fears re the potential this postal vote has for sowing divisiveness are coming to fruition. I’m starting to think that the right wing religious nutcases are just as great an impediment to a fairer society as the corporates.

  2. kristapet

It is shameful that lying is endorsed by a government and it’s leader, as well as frightened religious, homophobic types
    Adults leading by example??!!
I never thought I would see the day when Lying has become the norm
This must be very confusing for children, teenagers and law breakers

Conservatives are averse to change. Some of them won’t even accept evolution as a scientific theory and they oppose social evolution tooth and nail.

Watch this short video….this is what it was like when I was young in the 70s.

    http://www.abc.net.au/tv/makingaustralia/educationextras/episode-one/clip-four.htm

Andrew Hastie said a few days ago that marriage is about “procreative potential”. I cannot believe, as I am about to turn 60, that we are still facing the same attitudes.

I don’t think I would marry anyone who considered my contribution to be, and judged my worth by, my ability to bear children.

They can have that opinion if they want. But they really should stop with the silly lies.

  4. Ill fares the land

The smart play by an intelligent government would have been to ban all advertising on the topic of marriage equality. There lies the rub. We are cursed with the most unintelligent government this country has ever seen. Looking back over recent history, I would have thought that only McMahon and perhaps Holt came close (McMahon was toad and Holt was thrust into a role he didn’t appear to want) and even both of those were able to claim some achievements in office. Our current bunch of fools, incompetents, liars and fruitcakes are masters at saying one thing and doing another. I won’t go on about this, but on marriage equality, they SAY they want the people to decide, but in reality they WANT the proponents from both sides to turn the debate into a an unpleasant farce. They say they support emission reductions, but their policies are all directed towards increasing emissions (beholden of course as they are to their friends in business).

The government knows that the “no” proponents are better funded and have more resources – since they are invariably from the religious and conservative right and have the support of churches and there vitriol knows few boundaries. I note that most of the church money that is being used to funds these attacks will be funded either from tax deductible gifts, or un-taxed earnings. How does that work?

It is all strangely paradoxical since the right purport to be Christians, but their hatred for those who don’t fit into their myopic and dogmatic religious views are anything but Christian. Apparently, Muslims are more hateful towards those outside their faith, but the loopy Christian right seem to have a perfectly adequate supply of bile they can bring to bear. Welcome to our world – the selfish, opinionated world we have created – everybody is entitled to their view, but I am entitled to shoot down and aggressively try to drown out any view I don’t agree with. We can no longer accommodate views that differ from our own and we will continue to fight until we subdue the opponents, however wrong we are (I actually think this is at the heart of much road-rage – a minor slight turns into a rage to dominate the other party that gets out of control with the wronged party trying to “win” – at all costs).

I would expect that most people have already made up their minds on this issue, so the opportunity to “advertise” one’s views is no more than an exercise in trying to turn the debate into a win-at-all-costs competition, which invariably encourages vituperative comments – potentially from the extremists on both sides. I noted yesterday that the ABC featured comments from the vice-president of the Liberal Party. I ask you – who gives a flying f*** about her views and what did they add to the “debate”? By what right does she believe she is entitled to a publicly funded platform to espouse the policy of her “party”?

I am not saying that people’s views don’t matter, but the only place it really matters is on a “quasi-ballot” paper and that is where the matter should rest. Utterly shameful performance from the LNP who could easily have prevented a farcical “debate” (it is in no way a “debate” in any form), that was always going to descend into viciousness and arguments allegedly spouting “facts”, but in that spurious and puerile way that Hanson uses “facts” – displaying yet again how readily the majority can mentally turn opinion into fact – a stunning piece of intellectual alchemy..

Lies and deceit and obscene hypocrisy are what we do in this brain dead wasteland. Here, on the Sunshine Coast, the local paper, the Sunshine Coast Daily, has recently been added to repulsive rupert’s media empire, complete with weekly Andy blot bullshit.

Absolutely no doubt that the shit is believed by a lot as evidenced by the letters to the editor. How these “Christians” can not see that equality is not determined by your preference of partner, that what type of sex, anything to do with who’s f#ckiing who, anything to do with anyone’s sex life is none of our business. This is simply a matter of equality.

For these “Christians” to be so rabidly opposed and yet condone indefinite detention of asylum seekers, to condone limited medical attention, to treat desperate people so cruelly is obscenely hypocrital.

How have we arrived at this moment? Lies, deceit, incompetence, corruption, treachery, greed and hate. All qualities embraced by the deranged collective, spewed forth by a corrupt media. How do we escape this spreading cancer? Are some of us, in the face of this onslaught, still capable of individual thought? Still have a little love left in our hearts?

  7. diannaart

Now the blighted bigots of the far-right are claiming the very mention of “Marriage Equality” is hurtful and causing them harm.

High Court please stop this charade.

  8. Kyran

    At the risk of sounding flippant, the ABC posted on a live feed at about 11.30 am the following;

“It appears the High Court challenge to the same sex marriage survey is causing quite a few dramas for the legal profession in Melbourne.

While the ‘yes’ campaign say this survey is a vote about love, the huge crowds (standing room only) have resulted in delays to multiple divorce proceedings being heard at the same time.”

If ever irony could be considered delicious, this would have to be right up there.
Thank you Ms Lee and commenters. Take care

The answere is simple – everyone must understand the truth about how money works. Its all about the money.

“Political correctness is not stopping silly people from telling lies”
It’s not stopping the smart ones either. Perhaps the silly sheeple are just repeating their shepherd’s bleating.

“If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it.
The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State.” — Joseph Goebbels

Santamaria is why I avoided getting political until I really had to take notice – whenever he appeared on the TV, I would leave and go play some music in my room. I don’t recall my parents taking much notice of him either.

  18. Kyran

It’s funny how a little information is stretched to breaking point to advance an implausible proposition.
The figures from surveys to date suggest that 60% of Australians favour marriage equality, 30% don’t, and about 10% are undecided. That 60% is now being represented as a vocal minority being given too great a voice, in their quest to extinguish the voice of the silent majority (30%), requires a belief in the absurd that would not pass kindergarten muster. Forget spin. Forget massaging the truth. That is simply bludgeoning any semblance of fact.
Some Neo Nazi, knuckle dragging, white, male supremacists, apparently a facebook group of about 1,000 people, have received prominence on the ABC website. Does promoting their right to free speech, devoid of intellect or fact, outweigh the publication of facts offered in defence of their inane, vacuous, imbecilic utterances? These gits hide behind ‘free speech’ to disguise the fact they have nothing to say. Certainly nothing worth listening to.
Does this ‘free speech’ thingy empower me to note that these imbecilic fools hide behind masks, whilst demanding that women shouldn’t be allowed to wear masks? Does it empower me to note that they promote their flag (if they can decide on one), to the exclusion of all others?
Lie to me once, shame on you. Lie to me twice, shame on me. It’s an oldie, but a goodie. How could we have foreseen that, in 2017, it needed a third sentence. Lie to me thrice, you can just feck off.
With regard to paedophilia, it is, for good reason, an emotive issue. That childish innocence can be abused by some people is an abomination. Estimates of paedophiles as a percentage of population range from 1-5%. Presumably, such a wide range has several causes. Whether it be the definition of paedophilia, the reluctance of people to disclose such an abhorrent practice, just to name 2. That those emotions are used and abused by advocates of any point of view is disgraceful. That the facts are obscured to fuel a phobia is merely par for the cause these days. Of the 5 most common misperceptions about paedophilia, homosexuality doesn’t get a mention.

    http://aic.gov.au/publications/current%20series/tandi/421-440/tandi429.html

That it is an emotional issue goes without saying. Try, if you can, to remove the emotion. If the range of offenders is from 1-5% of the adult population, dependant on description, let’s assume, for the sake of discussion, that we agree on a figure of 3% as the ‘mean’. Catholic clergy, according to the RC, participate at a rate of 7% of their population.
There have been no definitive studies done by the Catholic Church with regard to the number of homosexual clergy, estimated at well over the 10% ‘mean’ ascribed to the general population. Most estimates are over 20%.
There have been no definitive studies done by the Catholic Church with regard to the number of clergy who have ignored their vow of celibacy. Some estimates go as high as 80%.
I have no interest in trying to abuse or vilify the Catholic Church. Their wanton ignorance of their own rules has rendered them impotent in any conversation. No amount of flagellation of others will ever restore their omnipotence.
Whatever distraction these numbnuts want to put up, whether it be the ACL, the IPA, the religious institutions (I picked on the Catholics because their Church is such an easy mark), the Liberals, the Nationals, etcetera, there is no escaping one inescapable fact.
    This is about equality.
The argument ‘they’ propose is that some should be more equal than others.
If this discussion gets away from them, you never know. We might start discussing equality for ethnic groups. Or ‘coloured’ groups (that Aussies seek a good tan, whilst decrying those of ‘colour’ has always escaped me). Or our First People. The list could well be endless.
    Equality.
Goodness knows where this will end. Will women, a mere 50% of the population, as defined by gender (rather than colour, religion, ethnicity, political affiliation), ever achieve equality? That ‘Equal Pay Day’ was yesterday, literally and metaphorically, is so yesterday.
The naysayers believe in equality. On ‘their’ terms.
The forsayers, it seems to me, just want equality. ‘On ‘just’ terms’.
Fancy the same rules applying to everyone? That is, apparently, fanciful. That ‘they’ peddle it, believing we may believe it, is beyond fanciful. It is nothing short of fraudulent.
    Equality.
    A bridge too far?
How the heck does the minority keep dictating?
Lie to me once, shame on you. Lie to me twice, shame on me. Lie to me thrice….
Thanks again, Ms Lee and commenters. Apologies for the rant. Tolerating fools is intolerable. Living by their rules is insufferable. Take care.

There are child sex robots available now. I haven’t decided either way on this one yet. Should they be prohibited? What do you think? Will they save children or lead to greater abuse?
    What’s next? Animal sexbots, aliens…..

Sorry for going off topic again. Not sure if it is related to political correctness or not. Delete this comment if considered taboo.

“Anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that ‘my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge.'” — Isaac Asimov

  20. Kaye Lee

Anything that causes children to be viewed as something other than our responsibility to protect and nurture, even in fantasy, should be banned. It must be made patently clear that it is totally unacceptable at any level.

  21. Harquebus

    Kaye Lee
Abhorrence was my initial reaction also, animals as well but, if it prevents a lifetime of torment for victims. What do we say to them? If only uncle so and so had a robot instead then, perhaps…..

I couldn’t find the article that I read but, an internet search confirms their availability.
Another headline I came across while looking.
“New sex robots with ‘frigid’ settings allow men to simulate rape”

Can the same reduce rape or will it increase the urge? Will one get a taste and progress to the real deal?

Will the call be made to allow marriage to robots and how will the PC crowd react?

I think that this will become an issue and will wait to hear other opinions over time before deciding on mine.

In case anyone is wondering, technology which, includes robots is something I try keep up with and is how I know of them.

  22. Kyran

    Nah, you got me Harquebus.
    The article referenced some Neo Nazi, knuckle dragging, white, male supremacists, who want to equate marriage equality with paedophilia. That was, in my opinion, in keeping with the intent of the article, as evidenced by the title;
“Political correctness is not stopping silly people from telling lies.”
I thought it may be helpful to introduce some facts. It is one thing to argue facts, as you well know. It is another thing altogether to offer distraction, in place of (and to the detriment of) facts.
You lost me with the introduction of sex toys. Robots are the latest incarnation of the ‘inflatable’ toys, which were a slight advancement on the old ‘porn rags’. All of them serve to gratify someone, and either subjectify or objectify lifeless forms for their gratification. Whether the objects are child like, female like, or male like is a point of interest only to those seeking lifeless self-gratification. Whether the objects are robots, inflatables, or paper, their only importance is to those seeking self-gratification.
How this is relevant to equality or child abuse is well beyond me.
Don’t worry too much about trying to regulate sex toys. Regardless of the delivery, or age, or gender, our politicians will never regulate that market. They need all the self-gratification they can get.
With all of the benefit of your FIGJAM wealth of knowledge, the best you can offer is distraction. Is that it?
“Sorry for going off topic again. Not sure if it is related to political correctness or not. Delete this comment if considered taboo.”
Nah, I don’t get it. You’re not sorry for going off topic. It is, after all, what you do. As for political correctness, it is a construct designed for the likes of yourself. It’s when you get to say something outrageous and belittle any detractors by suggesting they are too sensitive. As for deleting the comment, why? Sometimes it is better to keep your mouth shut and have people think you’re a fool, rather than open your mouth and remove all doubt. Between you and talcum, you really don’t get this internetty thing, do you? When you say something stupid, it stays there. A reminder, for all, about fools.
I trust my freedom to speak hasn’t offended your sensitivities.
    Take care
