Oxfam Australia welcomes Australia’s backing of UN Resolution on “permanent sovereignty” of Palestinians

Oxfam Australia Media Release

Oxfam Australia welcomes the Australian Government’s vote in favour of a United Nations resolution affirming the “permanent sovereignty” of Palestinians’ over their natural resources in the Occupied Palestinian Territories.

By supporting this resolution, Australia has made a significant statement in support of Palestinians’ fundamental rights.

Oxfam is deeply concerned by the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Millions of Palestinians’ face severe deprivation as Israel continues its bombardment, resulting in mass casualties, forced displacement, starvation, and the destruction of essential infrastructure.

Lyn Morgain, Oxfam Australia Chief Executive Officer, welcomed the vote, and reiterates that the most pressing need is a permanent ceasefire to end the ongoing violence.

“We welcome news that the Australian Government backs the UN resolution on Palestinian sovereignty, after abstaining on the vote for 13 years.

“Civilians continue to pay the price for the failure of their leaders to resolve a conflict that has led to the longest occupation in modern history.

“The Australian Government must further use its influence to advocate for an immediate ceasefire and an end to the siege of Gaza, which is a breach of International Humanitarian Law. Conditions on the ground are deteriorating rapidly, and it is nearly impossible for humanitarian operations to resume amidst relentless bombings and blockades. The siege must be lifted, and life-saving resources—water, food, and fuel—allowed to reach those in need.”

The government’s decision has clearly upset some folk – if the following comment is any guide:
“Jewish groups in Australia have condemned the government’s support of the resolution, saying it constituted abandonment of Israel as it fought an existential war against Iran and proxies like Hamas.”

At this point along the historical time-line, I suggest the Israelis ask themselves why it is they don’t feel any safer after having been in almost continuous conflict with their Palestinian neighbours for the last 70 or so years. I suggest it might have something to do with the animosity of those who are now strangers in their own land, deprived of a livelihood and a future – having been kicked off their land and many forced into the ghetto that was Gaza, and presently being kicked out of their homes and villages in the West Bank – which no doubt will be annexed.

According to one recent report, the IDF plans on being in Gaza for some time and is in the process of enlarging the cleared land already under military control – to such an extent “…that the Netzarim Corridor, the Philadelphi Corridor, and the buffer zone account for 26% of Gaza’s territory.”

It’s funny how this ongoing land theft and violent dispossession just doesn’t seem important enough to get a mention in our MSM. I do wonder if that is because our MSM happen to believe the Israeli claim that they cannot “occupy” their own land – land given to them by God, and anyway they are merely removing those who have no right to be there in the first place.

As a consequence I have to ask: can the likes of Murdoch and others in the MSM really believe that, because if they don’t, then why continue to support an ongoing genocide – what’s in it for them? Conversely, who do they not wish to upset? Perhaps someone could let me know.

Whilst mainly symbolic and a move that Israel will undoubtedly ignore Australia joined with 158 countries including the UK, New Zealand, France, Germany and Japan to support a UN committee vote on a draft resolution recognising the “permanent sovereignty of the Palestinian people in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, and of the Arab population in the occupied Syrian Golan over their natural resources, including land, water and energy resources”. Seven states voted against the draft resolution (Argentina, Canada, Israel, Federated States of Micronesia, Nauru, Palau, United States).

Penny Wong and the Albanese government are to be congratulated for taking a principled position which at the very least demonstrates to the Israeli government that a two-state solution is the only way ahead and that the continued destruction and confiscation of ‘natural resources’ brings with it consequences.

    About bloody well time.

Pussy footing around, trying hard not to upset the sensibilities of those who support Israel over humanitarianism while thousands die because they are Palestinian…. or should that be not Jewish, not Israeli as Lebanese are also now being killed by the thousands sends, a message that starving 2 million people in Gaza is OK, that taking land from Bedouin shepherds is OK, that bulldozing houses of Arabs whose families have lived in the West Bank for countless generations is OK, so long as the Israelis’, wearing the victim badge of Holocaust survivor show themselves to be as racist and as ruthless as the Nazi oppressors of the 1930’s and 40’s.

So much was done to redress the persecution of Jews and that seems to be forgotten.

    A short list,
UN declaring a two state Israel/Palestine in 1948
The establishment of the International Court of Justice which hold those who order genocide and those who carry out the orders to justice
    The Declaration of Human Rights.

These are easily forgotten when the victim badge is worn prominently, and the victim condones the oppression of others.
