Listen to him

Listen to him; three words saved a Presidential candidacy and shook my world as I embarked upon the ever-narrowing track of the sunset years of my life.

I do not intend to wax lyrical about a particular judgment delivered by the highest court in the land of the star-bangled-banner other than briefly observing that I, too, am alarmed by its ramifications for American democracy and, of course, to share my sympathy for the groundkeeper at Mount Vernon having to contend with trying to stop George spinning in his grave, again. Nor do I intend to allow my alacrity to be consumed too much by the words of the song “You’re once, twice, thirty-four times a felon”, other than observing that no good comes from letting one’s mushroom out of the packet. No, I intend to address two topics: Ageism and President Biden’s final words, which were spoken at the press conference: ‘Listen to him’.

Without any equivocation, Biden’s performance at the debate was lousy; however, the opportunistic and predatory nature of the American media never ceases to amaze me. Joe Biden is not blessed with John F Kennedy’s eloquence, nor is he blessed with Barack Obama’s smooth and elegant oratory charm, but for the love of Christ, cut it out with the ageism, you blood-hungry circling morass of amateur beat-street-reporters.

As someone now on the wrong side of 55, the moment I hear the words ‘too old’, I am consumed by the thought in response: “For whom? Your momma?!?” Winston Churchill was 77 when he was reelected to be the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom in 1951, and he remained a Member of Parliament until he was 90. Her late Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, ably served as the monarch until she passed at 96 years of age, and I certainly did not hear any members of the House of Commons calling for her to abdicate because of her age. The President of Ireland, Michael Higgins, is still toiling away for the polity of Eyre at the graceful age of 83.

Joe Biden has been managing so many domestic and foreign challenges, not to mention that his economic agenda is making the American economy great again (that will cause a few jars of moonshine to hit the floor at GOP Central). All the Fox News parrots like to carp on about age until you ask them about the age of their dark overlord, Rupert ‘Montgomery Burns’ Murdoch, being no fewer than 93 excruciating years, and then watch them fawn away about how sprightly Darth Sidious is. So, forget the ageism, please, as a person should not be immediately redundant because of their age; by the way, Donald Trump is no spring chicken himself at 78, and he looks like he is a hamburger short of a myocardial infarction.

The issue of ageism then leads to Joe Biden’s final enlightening words at the end of the NATO press conference: ‘Listen to him.’ Sure, Joe Biden got some names muddled up, but guess what, sniping morass of media sharks, who doesn’t? The youthful Justin Trudeau forgets names, and he is a spring chicken. However, let us not forget Donald Trump has referred to Joe Biden as being Barack Obama. He also referred to Nikki Haley when he should have said Nancy Pelosi, and, rather cringingly, he even misspelt his wife’s name (not to mention speaking about Hannibal Lecter as a natural person).

So, what is in a name? Not much, instead, what Trump says or doesn’t say should be the focal point of this presidential campaign. Donald Trump has not said he will accept the outcome of the 2024 election if he loses. Indeed, he said there would be a “bloodbath” if he loses the election, so Mike Pence may wish to stay home on January 6 2025. Donald Trump said he would encourage Russia to do “whatever the hell they want” to any NATO member, so it is safe to say Vladimir Putin is rooting for Trump to win the 2024 Presidential Election. Then there is Donald Trump’s desire to be a dictator, even only walking it back to one day (that is all a dictator needs), as well as using Adolf Hitler’s rhetoric of referring to Latin American people as being vermin. Donald Trump’s stated economic agenda of reducing taxes, including abolishing corporate tax, has been dismissed by economists and business leaders as nonsensical and will increase inflation, not to mention the economic disaster he caused during his first term.

Joe Biden is right: Listen to what Donald Trump says, and what you hear will terrify you.

Amusing, but pointless. We have no say, sensible people have no say, important people seem to have no say; Trump, an excruciatingly inadequate arsehole, is a dud, ready to drop. Biden may not last four and a half weeks, let alone years. The USA, riddled with egotistical dunces and duds, is unfit to lead a world by self declaration, being juvenile, uncivilised, land socially incontinent. It’s great shame for the good people there, but moneygrubbing, media maggots. corporate predators, absurd attitudes, runaway public policy stupidity, have doomed them to laughable humiliation.

I absolutely agree. Trump is playing the media using his ‘look over there’ strategy to divert attention away from him. If the media would do their job, they’d have called out Trump for his drivel and lies ages ago. He has made more than his fair share of blunders. There is nothing wrong with criticism as long as it is targetted at both candidates and focusses on important issues. Apparently the great majority of Republican supporters have never heard of Project 2025.

  3. Old bloke

Well said Phil, but ‘have doomed them to laughable humiliation’. Do you think they care, those who will benefit from a Trump Reich? As long as they have the power to change the country into their own image they do not care one iota what anyone thinks. Sociopathic retards.

Not just Trump, but like Australia and UK how the formerly ‘media of public record’ or ‘legacy media’ has gone ‘full monty’ into running protection for power e.g. the NYT, WP, WSJ, CNN, Fox, TV, regional RW Sinclair media etc.

‘Circular firing squad’ that’s been throwing challenges at Biden-Dems, by over reliance on suboptimal polls and avoiding any mention of Trump; like Murdoch led RW MSM vs Shorten several years ago, based on sentiments and perceptions, allowing Morrison an uncritical platform, while disappearing his embarrassing team.

Worse, while all US RW media CEOs have donated to the GOP &/or Trump, they are mute about not just all the issues around Trump, but the most used Google search term, referring to Koch Network Heritage’s disturbing and dystopian white Christian nationalist ‘Project 2025’, of which Trump claims no knowledge, yet it’s overpopulated by his former aides….and his own public support; gaslighting….

controversy is the number 1 ad seller followed by sex and violence. trump and dutton are good at controversy biden and labor are not QED.

In the last forty-eight hours I have heard ABC hosts Fran Kelly and John Barron (Planet America) mix up people’s names ; it’s a human failing at all ages.

  7. corvusboreus

Two crusty old white guys offering a choice between gibbering megalomania or mumbling incomprehension.

Meanwhile, the current VPOTUS is female, dark-skinned, coherently articulate and, importantly,
well below retirement age with no obviously apparent cognitive or mental health issues.

Personally, I think Kamala Harris might be a better choice than Biden in terms of energising and convincing diverse young undecided US voters to turn out for the blue cause in November, an opinion reinforced by recent US polling, but I was not consulted on the matter.

‘Bob Roberts’ (1992) starring Tim Robbins.

A far-right Christian nationalist populist candidate is propelled into the US presidency, riding a wave of sympathetic support for his hardline agenda after a false flag ‘assassination attempt’.

    Worth a rewatch.

  9. Harry Lime

The outpouring of hypocrisy is breathtaking…”no place for this sort of violence in America”,what’s even worse, the bastard missed.

  10. GL

    Harry,

Sadly, if the bullet had hit him the head it would still have missed his brain by at least 2 metres.

  11. Canguro

The civil war looms… enchanting how the enchanted crowd erupted into chanting USA, USA, USA… after the blood-spattered MAGA nutcase was hoisted to his feet from the Secret Service crush. Can’t imagine an Aussie crowd doing the same if one of our political leaders were to suffer the same fate… but then, we don’t do the mass rallies circus that epitomises America politics. As heartless as it sounds, and it is, but a pity the bullet wasn’t an inch or two to the left.

Harry’s on the money… hypocritical expressions of concern; Rudd, Bush, Albanese, Obama, more to come no doubt, even Biden if he can remember the victim’s name… with their faux wishes for the despicable Trump’s health & safety. Bloody hell, speak the truth!

In the latest update, “US president Joe Biden says today’s shooting was “inappropriate”. Subtext: the shooter missed.

  12. Bert

The bastard missed, and that is probably a good thing, had he hit all hell would have broken out, riots, and mass shootings.

That he missed may actually force a reality check, that just maybe things have got a little out of hand.

And on the age thing, I am active in a political party and see how hard the candidates and when elected, the representatives have to work. I am turning almost 80 soon and most certainly would not welcome such an impost in my life. It is time for both Trump and Biden to hand over to younger, fitter people.

  13. John C

How could the shooter miss such a huge target?? I’m not talking about his obese big mac fueled waistline either. His head is swelled to the size of the Goodyear blimp from his overinflated ego and glows an iridescent orange and still the best the guy could do was wing his ear. What a cuntry!! You made your bed Mr Felon so now you have to lie in it! Sadly all the good Seppos are going to suffer because of this..

  14. Max Gross

Neither Trump nor Biden should run again for President. The former is a vile, venal wannabe dictator, the other an accomplice to genocide.

  15. corvusboreus

    Max Gross,
Probably worth remembering that not only did Trump, as POTUS 45, move the US-Israeli embassy from Tel-Aviv to Jerusalem, but, in the recent bawl-vs-mumble ‘debate’, he also vowed to allow Israel the means to “finish the job in Gaza”.

  16. JulianP

@Harry Lime. Agreed Harry (and Canguro), the hypocrisy is something to behold, especially given the inherent violence of American foreign policy.
As to the deed itself, a mate tells me that a section of social media opinion seems presently divided over whether US gun owners need lessons in how to shoot straight, or whether it was in fact a well-aimed shot.
Either way, the incident tells us a fair bit about the potential for chaos.
Interesting that no one in Australia who is “officially” able to do so seems willing to contemplate what such upheaval and instability might mean to us being “joined at the hip” to our major ally and “protector”.
Just think. we might actually have to get on with the Chinese – it would certainly beat being a target.

  17. Harry Lime

GL,you’d have to shoot him in the arse to get anywhere near his brain. Canguro,I’d be surprised if he doesn’t leverage his victimhood with this near miss, probably have a medal struck in his honour, given the commercial possibilities. Now he can claim that God is definitely on his side, with a new line of bibles personally signed by the almighty hisself.(for the benefit of his illiterate followers) Julian P,it certainly wasn’t a professional hit, just ask the FBI or the Mafia. And yeah, we,d be a lot safer with the Chinese….I wonder if it’s too late to get a clearance?
Just read Binoy’s latest….what can I say? We’re all unwilling captives in a giant ,global joke.
