Is it not time for all to unite to combat the climate emergency?
The school children’s March 4 Climate managed to garner the headlines for a while but there are still too many adults who accuse the parents as being responsible and claim the children don’t know what it is all about.
Greta Thunberg proves that is far from the case, but surely it is now past time for the adults to take the stage?
Social media makes it clear that there are diverse groups which are all active in campaigns to raise awareness about climate change/global warming, fracking, coal mining, underwater exploration for oil, pollution, out of control emissions of greenhouse gases etc.
This article is addressed to a few of them.
Is it not time for them all to unite?
I presume there are Environment Centres in all states and territories, just as there are EDOs across the country.
GetUp! is a bit on the nose so might need to take a back seat, but the other major organisations already campaigning for action should, IMHO, all join forces in a major and continuing campaign.
We have to counter the arguments that Australia alone will make little impact on the world scene – which totally discounts significant efforts elsewhere which are already bearing fruit.
We have to get on board the growing number of corporations which are already uneasy about the future in the absence of serious efforts to change current practices affecting the climate emergency.
We have to highlight the likely costs associated with future severe and catastrophic weather events, with lives lost, and the associated likelihood that insurance will cease to be available.
We need to emphasise the effects on increasing numbers of displaced people from low lying areas which face inundation.
Many medical groups would be on board, particularly on the grounds of health effects of atmospheric pollution.
Too many governments are only thinking in sound bites and time spans between elections.
Every day which goes by without taking action makes a thoroughly inauspicious outcome more likely.
But I fight a losing battle trying to arouse my own family!
I am also deeply concerned that the USA has a President who believes climate change is a hoax, China is clearly more interested in ruling the world than in saving it and Russia is controlled by a man who is blinkered against all concerns except the need to retain power.
I don’t know, as a single civilian, how best to attack this problem but I am sure there are many among you who do.
I am sure methods would include coordinated demonstration all round the country, mail and email campaigns directed at governments at all levels and possibly strikes, particularly among essential services!
I am not seeking personal glory, but I do hope for action in the immediate future. I have 3 great grandchildren, all under 10 years old!
We have not been helped by the fact that self-interest has resulted in our electing an Australian government which is deaf to all scientific arguments – despite the fact that Exxon and Shell have known the facts for almost 3 decades!!
What action can we jointly take to greatest effect?

- Even if it is, the increase has no impact on the climate since there is no convincing evidence of warming.
- Even if there is warming, it is due to natural causes.
- Even if the warming cannot be explained by natural causes, the human impact is small, and the impact of continued greenhouse gas emissions will be minor.
- Even if the current and future projected human effects on Earth’s climate are not negligible, the changes are generally going to be good for us.
- Whether or not the changes are going to be good for us, humans are very adept at adapting to changes; besides, it’s too late to do anything about it, and/or a technological fix is bound to come along when we really need it.

Let’s not lose too much sleep!
CO2 is not a major driver of global temperature.
Why – A significant number of recent scientific papers show that an increase of carbon dioxide to 560 ppm will only result in a temperature rise of around 1 degree celsius (or even much less), not the 3 or 4 degrees still predicted by the vested interests (who fear losing their lucrative research funding).
The truth is starting to emerge.

At a recent first aid refresher course, I met an environmental engineering student from a Queensland university with a red logo. The class was asked to write an assignment discussing the issues associated with climate change. I indicated I was a bit of a skeptic on the political science of climate change and we discussed the assignment. With a GPA of 4.8, the student was a high achiever and decided to research the case against man-made climate change in preparing a case for it. The student said the research conducted did NOT support the case for it. The assignment was then written about the findings and submitted. The student received a B+ and when the lecturer was challenged about the mark, the student was told “you picked the wrong side of the argument”!
If this is what is happening across the board with environmental engineering, no wonder the kids are rallying around the cause!

It is suggested that the warning provided by the IPCC is too conservative when taking into account a study completed by Dr James Hansen, that appears true.

I think you need to re-calibrate your satellites, and update any equipment you might have to analyse ice cores, pollen samples etc.
Satellite data displays how there is temperature variation between the troposphere and lower stratosphere; in other words greenhouse gases are working exactly as scientists are saying. You are not able to produce any objective data to uphold your view. If you do feel as though you can back up what you have written please produce evidence. Not a tirade, but a request to uphold your point of view.
Perhaps you can tell me the answer as to why contrarians no longer use use 1998 as a datum point in relation to temperature? I have often asked this question, though no answer has ever been given.
Pages 2k provides proxies from both Hemispheres for 2,000 years displaying how the arguments from contrarians about the Roman period and Medieval period being as warm, if not warmer, are completely wrong.

I’m not going to bother with those who think CO2 emissions aren’t a problem. The evidence is irrefutable and has been oft quoted. Anyone who is not convinced is not going to be by any more evidence.
What I find most interesting is, in the latest GHG emissions data just released….
Australia’s emissions for the year to December 2018 were 0.4 per cent above emissions in 2000.
Our commitment is for them to be 5% below 2000 emissions by this time next year. Forget the canter, we couldn’t meet that in a runaway breakneck gallop.
The denier trolls are are out in force today. Note how they all have different explanations about what is causing warming.
The reason is that the deniers are paid to deny the science – and it does not matter what they say, as long as it is denial, to satisfy the piper who pays them.
The main point of argument by deniers is the claim that CO2 has no influence on global warming. What they refuse to recognise is that it has been known since about 1820 that CO2 acts like a blanket even at 280ppm (pre-industrial) and has kept the Earth at an average temperature of about 14 degrees C for at least the past 10,000 years.
As Keith point out, the present CO2 level is about 410ppm.That must men something. And the rate of change in the past 60 years. Not natural at all. It is about human activity, as can be told by carbon isotopes in the atmosphere.
Even Bob Carter in his book tells us CO2 is a strong greenhouse gas. Ian Plimer contradicts him and says it is not. Why can they not agree?
You deniers need to take notice of what Keith and others say which is in alignment with the IPCC.

Oh really? Tens of millions? And in Africa alone? And we are to suppose there are millions of other people dying in other parts of the world for lack of coal fired electricity and that this has been happening for centuries. More than weird!

As for people dying because of no coal, how about the ones dying because of coal?
Coal is responsible for over 800,000 premature deaths per year globally and many millions more serious and minor illnesses. In China alone, around 670,000 people die prematurely per year as a result of coal-related air pollution. The ‘Coal Kills’ report estimates that in India coal contributes to between 80,000 to 115,000 premature deaths annually. In the United States coal kills around 13,000 people annually, and 23,300 in Europe. The economic costs of the health impacts from coal combustion in Europe are valued at about US$70 billion per year, with 250,600 life years lost.
There are many things we can do as individuals and as groups working together. First, recognise that a number of the commenters here are surprisingly ignorant, and count as those people who, plummeting towards the ground from a great height would say, “it’s all right so far.” Even their references are rather inbred.
I suggest you become active in a local Climate Action Group. There are many of these, some more active than others. Many are working towards creating a circular economy, or promoting low carbon living or simply planting trees (and shrubs and grasses for habitat resilience). The Transition movement has its interesting side, with community gardens and local renewable power being typical actions. Some groups are ‘think global, act local’ in philosophy while others are more focussed on political action and/or community education. Groups grow and change over the years, depending on the enthusiasms of their memberships. You may be able to find the right one for yourself by looking on-line, or on local community noticeboards at the library. If all else fails, look on a Landcare gateway site; you will find that most people who do Landcare are both aware of the reality of the climate crisis and they will know about other environmental action groups in your area.

If coal was so good for you, how come Britain has banned the burning of it?
So the supporting link posted by Terence (the bloke who praised the honesty of Tony Abbott and the scientific education of Donald Trump) to support his claim that the overwhelming majority of the world’s climate scientists are either totally wrong or deliberately lying, turns out to be a smog-site written by a civil/mechanical engineer who blogs ‘strictly for fun’.
How surprising.
For those deniers who love to spout the notion that scientists previously predicted an approaching Ice Age, here’s the real story.
Back in the late sixties a group of climate scientists suggested that the amount of aerosols humans were putting into the atmosphere would eventually overtake and reverse the Greenhouse Effect. (Note they still believed in warming). The reduction in global temperature to bring about an ice age would be around 4%.
The number who scientists believed it was a possibility was only around 10%. About 30% claimed there was no data to support the theory and the remaining 60% denied it was even a possibility.
Research of aerosols later confirmed the creation of the hole in the ozone layer. Where were the deniers then? Where was the accusation of faulty science and selective modelling?
Perhaps they weren’t around because the chemical industry that created the problem also provided the solution so no huge dollars were involved.
Meanwhile the 911 truthers and the flat-earthers also continue to grow in numbers. People love a good conspiracy, even if it kills them.

In the 1970s scientists working for/ or contracted to fossil fuel interests were providing science which underpinned anthropogenic climate change. Projections were made in relation to temperature and CO2 levels and came up with very accurate results almost 40 years ago.
