Call for a Global Plan for Human Survival
Media Release from the Commission for the Human Future
Canberra, March 28, 2020: A group of Australian scientists, business leaders, public servants and academics has called for the world’s nations to come together to develop a strategy for human survival.
Recognising mounting catastrophic risks from mismanaged human and environmental systems, under-regulated weapons and the failure of our political processes to address serious challenges like climate change and pandemic disease, the newly formed Commission for the Human Future said it is time for humanity to act together to secure our future.
“The coronavirus pandemic, Australia’s recent bushfire crisis and severe drought highlight how catastrophic risks are building up. Most countries are experiencing similar increases in uncontrolled threats. These are a wake-up call to the whole of humanity that it is time for action,” Commission chairman Professor John Hewson said.
“At our online Roundtable today, we considered ten major catastrophic threats to humanity – and we recognised they are interconnected. This means we must solve them together, not one at a time, and with solutions that make no threat worse. What we are facing now with COVID19 is a dress rehearsal for other threats to come.”
“The group also agreed that many practical solutions exist and can easily be implemented to avoid catastrophic consequences in the years ahead.
“What humans do about catastrophic risks in the next decade will determine whether current and future generations will face serious threats to their survival – or whether we can build a safer, more prosperous and sustainable future.
“The group concluded that solving these risks holds tremendous opportunities for wellbeing, development, stability, peace and renewal for the whole world – and that the benefits to all of acting now as a global community are enormous.”

Anyone who sees what is happening MUST see a change in human trajectory is vital. We cannot go on as we are now, and this catastrophe gives us reason to evaluate everything.
I think I would rather see the planet survive free of us rapacious creatures. All well and good to search for strategies to continue our pathetic behaviour, but unless there is a mass awakening and an admittance that we really don’t deserve this beautiful planet, that we have completely and totally fcked up, that we now come to some sort of sanity and a realisation that we are the caretakers, not the dominators, that we don’t battle nature but are part of nature, that, really we are all one within this magnificent creation, then no, we are doomed to fail.
What karmic judgment, if there is such a thing, would you or you make regarding our ongoing willingness to destroy? Do you think it enough that we are permitted to lick our wounds, pick up our lives and move on? Keeping in mind, of course, us, the brits and trumpopia are ruled by the three stooges of the apocalypse. All living their vile wet dreams, living their denial, their delusions, their criminal negligence, their crimes against this planet and it’s life forms.
We have run out of warnings from nature, deaf to the desire of nature to wake us up, to stop this trashing. We trash nature, we trash each other, we are morally bankrupt, deaf to the plight of the disadvantaged. But onwards we go thinking next election we can change this present reality. No we can’t because this sickness of the soul will continue to eat away any shred of what it may mean to be regarded as a sane, worthwhile human.
As always, nature will have the final word.
I can’t help thinking that the planet will be a better place if humans do not survive.
Off topic but germane, does anybody know whether the 2500 marines due to land in Darwin in early April will be turned away? I don’t GAF if they will be spending two weeks in isolation, they have the capacity to put indigenous lives at enormous risk. These are not normal times, their President thinks it’s all a big joke and they would be better off helping their own country.

Trudy, thank Dog for that. It would have been insanity to allow it to proceed, but the appalling failure of Border Farce and The Salesman’s general farting around inspires no confidence that they would see this as a critical step. Mustn’t offend the Orange Cheeto, even in the face of a killer pandemic.
Can you imagine the reaction of US contrarians and hard libertarians to such an idea?
