Anyone Want A Bet That Abbott Wins The Next Election?

“It is an absolute principle of democracy that governments should not and must not say one thing before an election and do the opposite afterwards. Nothing could be more calculated to bring our democracy into disrepute and alienate the citizenry of Australia from their government than if governments were to establish by precedent that they could say one thing before an election and do the opposite afterwards.” Tony Abbott, August 22, 2011

Ok, you must note that he didn’t say that there was any problem with OPPOSITIONS saying one thing before an election, and something else after!!!!

See, the promise you all thought he made…

Anyway, let’s move on. There’s no point in living in the past. As Tony Abbott will clearly tell you, the adults are in charge, so stop talking about what promises I may or may not have made when the only important one was removing the Gillard government, because – after all – we have to talk about what Labor governments are like. Lets stop talking about the past and look at history.

Anyway, as I said, let’s move on…

Tomorrow, the Victorian Election takes place.

As I pointed out in the title, Sportsbet are paying out already on a Labor win. Why would they do that? I mean, it’s close and the Liberals can win, right? After all, hasn’t Dennis Nap-time been campaigning in seats that the Liberals hold by a margin of up to 7%? Surely that’s a sign that they’re confident of the marginals and he just wants to reward the faithful by his presence! And surely, Tony Abbott’d be down here campaigning for all he’s worth if it was it wasn’t already in the bag for the Liberals…

Mm, am I missing something?

Like the fact that Mr Abbott needs to stay in Canberra and brief the other members of his party about the things he briefed the journalists about a few days ago, because it seems that some of them don’t seem to know that the Medicare copayment has gone the way of the sugar. It’s off the table.

It’s being reconsidered/dropped/negotiated/introduced/slid in via regulation/sent to a tax haven/um, I’ll get back to you on that/let me be very clear/um/I’m backing Tony Abbott and whatever he said is our policy.

Sigh<

Who thinks that Abbott’ll be replaced before Christmas? Yep, neither do I?

Let me just say this: If Abbott is replaced before Christmas, I promise there’ll be no cuts to trees this year…

And if there are, let me just say that I won’t let anyone stop Christmas or logging and I thought I made that clear when I said that there’d be no cuts!

Sportsbet are dicing with death, here. There is as much sense in paying out prematurely on an election result as there is paying out prematurely on an AFL Grand Final. It’s never over until the fat lady sings.

  2. Erotic Moustache

Interestingly, bookies have a strong record when it comes to political outcomes. This is a positive sign – he said, abandoning what he knows to be a rational engagement with reality. 🙂

  3. Rotha Jago

Where did this ‘Absolute Principal of Democracy’ come from? This Democracy is also a Capitalist Society where
Any attempt to accumulate Capital eg by telling lies, by blowing up other peoples’ infrastructure and charging them to rebuild it, or by taking possession of other peoples’ land are all OK, so why imagine that Governments should behave honestly to their constituents before or after elections? We are living on stolen land. Not my crime or yours, but we are happy to close our eyes and take the spoils of our forbears’crimes.
The present PM is not my favourite parliamentarian, and his party appears either stupid or corrupt or both, but
Please don’t write a lot of high blown rhetoric which glorifies a very imperfect system.
The people in our parliament all must have a tough time considering the public interest in a system so open to corruption and manipulation that it is teetering on the brink of collapse. Tony got there by lying, dissembling,
And mercilessly tearing down the then Government. Do you really think he is the only one on only one side of
Politics who tries to win at all costs? We all have to take responsibility for this mess. Pompous nonsense cannot help our country out of this hole we have made for ourselves.

  4. David

I have a gut feeling the Bookie has this one bang on. Record numbers of Victorians have pre election day voted….I feel in my bones for Labor
PS Rossleigh you sure bring the oddies Rotha Jago, out of the woodwork 🙂

  5. atkenos

Cabinet reshuffle is pretty much guaranteed

  6. David

Two points come to mind..does the toxic PM have the spine to replace Hockey? I doubt it, suicide. Will he renege on his Defense Minister ‘he has my complete confidence’ proclamation? No
Not because he believes in either of them, but he regards dismissing Ministers he has appointed as a reflection on himself, not the Ministers. Like all psychotics that doesn’t fit how he he sees himself as the successful leader of the band

  7. keerti

Regarding reflections.I very much doubt that when toneless, Sorry! tones, sorry the ar…..e looks in a mirror that he sees anything!

  8. Roswell

Keerti, when Abbott looks in the mirror he sees a young, handsome, respected, intelligent and much admired leader loved by all.

That’s not what he is, of course, but it’s what he sees.

  9. olive

no way Abbott will be replaced …remember he’s a street fighter…………….
he knows where all the bodies are buried …!!! and also we need him to stay and be so bad that Libs will be get royally booted out and be in the wilderness for a long long time

  10. Rotha Jago.

Sorry, Rossleigh, I accept that you were quoting Abbott’s pompous nonsense, and my remarks should have been directed at him.
Relentless negativity no matter how warranted is having an unfortunate effect on my brain. The Victorian election might show the way, who knows? Strange things are happening. Politics is being treated like sport.
And sport is taken a lot more seriously now that a galant batsman has died on the field.

  11. Annie B

I admit to a giggle or five when the Abbott was distinctly noticeable by his absence – here in Victoria, to bolster and prop up ( most likely with THE most inappropriate yabber if he had been here ? ) …. his ‘friend’ Denis Nap-time ………. [ love that one ]

( Rossleigh – – – I will most likely NEVER call our current ??? Premier by his proper name again – !! )

It’s fairly widely known that Denis N does not particularly like the Abbott – so perhaps he less than politely asked him to begger off for the sake of his last ditch campaign here. …… So Madama Batting-of-the-eyelids Bishop appeared instead. ….. Smiles all round.

She was asked by a reporter, if ” Mr. Abbott’s lack of popularity was the reason he was not here ” ( or words to that effect ) …… well – what would she say except ” that’s rubbish ” – with a nice wee smile.

She could hardly have broken faith and told the truth now, could she ?

Abbott did appear last week very very briefly while Denis Nap-time was speaking – he leered over the left shoulder of the Premier – ( gotta get me face on camera ) …. and I frankly believe he was nudged or pushed away by Denis N – so quickly did he disappear, with the hint of a jerky movement.

The vote will be interesting – and possibly closer than we might think.

  12. DanDark

    Annie,
Bill Shorten came out with a ripper today, saying that tones must be in witness protection…lol
they have hidden him from view because Vic “never loved Tones”,
but to bring out J Bishop was even funnier, one commentator reckoned that it was desperate and showed the missing Abbott up more, its a circus that’s for sure 🙂
Shorten has been solid he has been in the media alot in past week, whacking Abbott any chance he gets, which has been a stark difference to Abbotts no show…”witness protection” lol lol lol

  13. stephentardrew

Gosh Rossleigh this one doesn’t twist my brain.

    Is everything alright?

  14. Salstarat

The danger with replacing the King of Neanderthals, Abbott, as the malignant Machiavellian leader of the LNP is that there is a likelihood that the dumbed down, regressive red neck BOGANS, that never hesitate to follow the LNP into oblivion without question, would, once again, pour into voting boxes like the proverbial lemmings going over a cliff to put their illegible mark against the LNP on the ballot paper at the next election! As long as the pathological LYING, knuckle dragging, unconscionably corrupt Abbott is there on his inexorable path to worldwide notoriety, we have a chance (a small one) that the moderate central conservatives within the LNP may see the error of their ways and, perhaps, even show a bit of remorse for the demonic mongrel they conjured up at the last election. The central moderates may even recognise, at last, that this unspeakable thuggish tyrant and his whole soul destroying cabinet are colossal, remorseless EPIC FAILURES and total oxygen thieves! If this happens, then .. and only then.. may they consider swinging their vote across to the more compassionate Labor or the environmentally aware Greens. Let’s face it, just about ANYTHING with a pulse would be a better leader than the internationally condemned and scorned political pariah, Abbott! However, if Asbestos Julie is the best creature that the LNP can vomit up as an alternative to the political leper, Abbott … God help them because this token female eunuch is about as toxic as the rest of them!

  15. Terry2

The very cynical move – typical of Abbott – to threaten to withhold a state infrastructure grant unless the money is spent on the East West Link is a new low for this government.

Does Abbott actually think that this is his money : it’s taxpayer’s money !

So, Victoria, do you capitulate and vote in a Liberal government or give Abbott the ‘finger’ and vote in Labor ?

  16. Kaye Lee

The Napthine government’s most senior transport planners detailed the superior economic return a rail tunnel under the city would bring to Melbourne compared with the East West Link, emails obtained by The Age reveal.

The emails show the planners calculated the rail tunnel would return $1.90 for every $1 invested compared with $1.40 for the road tunnel.

But in it’s usual inimitable fashion, the Abbott government ignores the expert advice and scrapped funding for Melbourne Metro and allocated the $3 billion to the East West Link instead.

  17. Möbius Ecko

Who thinks that Abbott’ll be replaced before Christmas? Yep, neither do I?

Channelling Abbott, I do. He’ll be gone before Christmas.

  18. Geoff Andrews

    Salstarat
I do wish you would stop aping our hard working Monster for Defence with your rhetorical flourish. Just say what you mean for gods’ sakes. I know your comments, like those of the Monster, were “not intended to offend” (I’m sure I heard him say) but they did a bloody good job of it for those lacking the poetic muse.

  19. David

“However, if Asbestos Julie is the best creature that the LNP can vomit up as an alternative to the political leper, Abbott … God help them because this token female eunuch is about as toxic as the rest of them!”…well said Salstarat good and faithful servant, tis the truth re Bishop. O villain, villain, smiling, damned villain she is!

  20. DanDark

    David
yep its the best they could come up with, Its called desperate and even the journos are saying Libs are looking desperate
Naptime said he would “get up earlier and work later to win the election”
But last night he rejected an offer to come on the abc State Victoria program
Unlike Daniel Andrews who took up the invitation which Jossie seemed very pleased about
Daniel Andrews has wiped the floor with Naptime and his mates 🙂
So why wasn’t Naptime taking an opportunity to get his message out there last night
Because he is sick of the questions about Tones, or because he knows he is going to lose, but its funny from where I sit LOL

  21. stephentardrew

Please Ms, Mr Gombo give me an early Christmas present.

I will even go to a ‘spill your guts out session’ and, heavens forbid, tell the truth.

Might rub off on Dear Bleeder his Vultureness; renderer of carcases; torturer of all things poor, blighted, suffering and marginalized.

  22. Blanik

Abbott will not be dumped! While he’s a total dummy and fool, the Liberals will not be silly enough to do what Labor did with their Rudd – Gillard – Rudd fiasco orchestrated by who? Mr Shorten, the current leader of the ALP?

  23. Annie B

DanDark …….. an interesting read in that link from the Age. !! Tku.

And ref. your early morning post ( 12.38 am ) …. I think Bill Shorten’s baby steps are lengthening. I hope they continue to do so until under Shorten’s sharp scrutiny, ( and he’s a lot sharper than most think ) the Abbott will have absolutely no-where to turn –

….. except maybe to his dear friend Speaker Cruella D V Bishop !! who can throw out even MORE Labor speakers, commenters – whatever – even if she tells them sit down and leave – at the same time !! ( Read that somewhere recently – can’t recall now – she has chucked out 285 from the Labor side and 4 from the Government – has established a record that may never be broken ). ….. I really could have laughed long and hard if it were not so ludicrous. As it was I just smiled a lot.

Anyway – got off point there a bit.

Apart from Bill Shorten having more to say, and in much harder voice – the media sees the turn and WILL follow him – because the current Government is displaying hints of spice, mystery and intrigue. And the media will drill the boots in no matter who is who and what is what. And no matter what the ailing ( business-wise ) Murdoch might have to say. But even HE has turned the screws somewhat in recent weeks. If Abbott is floundering ( which he is ) the media will go for his throat. No second thoughts about it.

From a distance – it gets more interesting every day. And if Abbott were in witness protection ? …… one would hope it would be a life-time intervention. LOL

  24. Annie B

    @ salstarat ……..

Have to agree with Geoff Andrews comment to you – his first two sentences especially.

On many posts now you have shown how incredibly angry you at the entire LNP situation, and at specific people in it. I understand your extreme anger and frustation – but it is often actually depleted in the flurry of adjectives and epithets you use.

If you have some fresh or positive ideas as to how to DEAL with this mob, let’s hear them – eh ? ……..

  25. Annie B

    @ Blanik.

Bill Shorten was NOT the only person to ‘orchestrate’ the Rudd-Gillard-Rudd fiasco. There were at least 4 ( possibly 5 ) others in the Labor party who were behind those moves. Don’t lay all the blame at Shorten’s feet. If I can ever find the link again about who did what and when – I will post it here for you.

Don’t hold your breath – it was a while back that I found it. Might have to track back thru my computer history for it.

  26. Bacchus

Perhaps not “dumped” Blanik, but there are more ways to skin a cat rat. Perhaps the dual citizenship will “suddenly” catch up with him, or he will need to retire to attempt to save his “ailing” marriage, or… I’m sure your imagination can conjure up many scenarios that could do the trick? 😉

  27. David

Desperate Politicians do desperate things Blanik, this Tory rabble are falling apart…blind Freddy can see it

  28. Blanik

Yes Annie, he wasn’t the sole person, one lone person couldn’t possibly have done it, I hope. However, it can be seen to have has worked out well for him and he is terribly quiet about fighting back. Sure I understand the need to ‘keep one’s powder dry’ but he hasn’t inspired me yet, nor has he inspired a lot of other folk.

I hope that I’m very, very wrong. Meanwhile, counting begins in Victoria in around fifteen minutes and Victoria is a very conservative state. If the fascists fall here I, and most Australian’s will be very happy people.

And, yes Dan they have been predicted lo lose based on Captain Catholic’s lies. I won’t be holding my breath until very late tonight.

  29. David

Annie I can help you with that with regard to the wankers who between them ran a behind the scenes campaign to undermine Julia.
From the Fin Review Bloodletting after Labor farce
    PUBLISHED: 22 Mar 2013 00:05:44 | UPDATED: 22 Mar 2013 09:10:37

As a triumphant Prime Minister Gillard demanded absolute loyalty from Labor MPs up to the election, some of Mr Rudd’s supporters began resigning from their government positions and former leader Simon Crean, who sparked the crisis by demanding Ms Gillard call a spill of leadership positions, was sacked as Regional Development and Arts Minister.

Richard Marles resigned as Parliamentary Secretary for Foreign Affairs. Joel Fitzgibbon, who was Mr Rudd’s chief numbers man, Ed Husic and Janelle Saffin, all resigned as whips.
There you have the main players, all disloyal bastards in their own ‘right’

  30. DanDark

    Blanik
Yes “It’s not over till the fat lady sings” over 1.3 million out of 3 .8 million people pre voted or voted via post
might not know a final result till Monday, it’s going to be a long weekend in that case 🙂

  31. Sad sack

I am a believer in the skill and power of gillard exposing shorten and Andrews as soft! So napthine and abbott are shoe-ins. Greens may benefit from Bryan brown and help the coalition!!!

  32. stephentardrew

    Sad Sack:

    Dead finished over nighty night.

  33. Blanik

It’s looking better than I ever dared to hope.

  34. DanDark

    Blanik
It’s looking fantastic, but as usual the libs , fed and state have their heads in the sand, “not our fault” they are almost robotic in their uniformed bullshit they are spewing forth, beware you are next Phony Tony 🙂

  35. DanDark

The greens have done very well today winning at least one seat and probably another one by end of night..

  36. Annie B

To Blanik and David ( ref : both yr late afternoon posts 29 Nov ) ……

Thanks David for some more info. on that Labor debacle.

    ———

I have to wonder at the ‘disloyal bastards’ bit – because – from where I sit and from what I know having been an active part of the DLP many moons ago – LOYALTY simply does NOT come into it.

Not one of the politicians posing around Australia are truly ‘loyal’ ……….. they go into politics for power, prestige and money. …. Having said that however, a few of them do go into that pursuit with good and well thought out policy – to put to the people. …. they are the ones who have a remaining smidgin of decency. ….. too often, they too, fall by the wayside.

So – what have I said ? ……… never trust any politician absolutely ? …….. Look at what they offer – and decide ? Yes.

And if ( as has happened in current Federal politics ) ….. the bastards change their minds completely from pre-election to post-election – then we know at least where we stand – that is – – – with a pack of liars.

This INCLUDES the disenchanted Libs. who are out there in droves at this time. They are ashamed ( as they should be ) of the Federal Government, and as far as the Victorian election is concerned, the Feds have cast their very long shadow on this lot. Much to the chagrin of Dr. Denis Napthine and his followers . ( or so it seems at 8.40 pm 29 Nov ).

This should NOT be. …. It is debilitating to the whole of Australia.

By saying that, I am not inferring that I am in Napthines corner – I am NOT. But the mud has stuck, and is now making a mockery of proper voting and democracy. Such is the far reaching tentacles of a corrupt Federal Government. At least Napthine showed some decency in ( presumably ) not granting Abbott entry into the Victorian realm. … At which I personally, had to have a big chuckle.

Daniel Andrews, if he claims victory …. will have to toe the line very carefully – or he will be out on his ear. And I think he is savvy enough to know how far he can go – if he wins. ……. the Vics will be watching him with hawk-eyes. ( as they always do !! )

  37. Annie B

To Dan Dark ( yr 3.50 pm post ) ..

Thanks for that link. Interesting to say the least. …….. AND coming from a Newscorp saturated source ??

This particularly nudged my ( currently befuddled political brain ) into waking up.

…………… ” “At their next meeting, the Premier asked (Mr) Abbott why he had not announced some of the nasty measures in an economic statement soon after winning office if federal finances were in such disrepair. ……..

“Getting them out into the open earlier, he said, would have made the impact on the Coalition’s re-election prospects in Victoria less devastating.”

“The PM’s answer was that he’d been concerned to avoid damaging Liberal chances in state elections in Tasmania and South Australia.”

Ye Gods and little fishes. …… Abbott has NOT got a clue …. that was definitely ‘up yours’ to the Victorian Premier.

Two totally different Liberal ideologies at work there, not to mention very obvious differences between the two men – as men.

While today I voted Labor right through – I also have to say that Denis Napthine didn’t do a bad job while governing – then went and buggered it up by signing very quickly that contract for the East West link thing – which will NOW come back and bite everyone in the bum – because of who ??????????? Bloody Abbott, who is ‘threatening’ where he will put his sodding money.

Mongrel – and it lives among us. !!!

  38. David

Sad sack true to name, true to prediction

  39. David

    1 plus looking…yep thats dark..what a victory 🙂 whatever squeezes your testies

  40. DanDark

    Annie
Abbott threw Naptime under the bus, and that link tells us that, not only did he throw him under a bus, he had multiple buses then run Dennis over, the petrol hike was one, what a disaster for Naptime and if Abbott brushes this off, all I can say is more fool him:) and this is the start of the end for a Tony and Co 🙂

  41. Annie B

    DanDark ………

You are right. Abbott did do that – but then he would throw just about anyone under a bus or train or any other bloody thing that will squish and squash – if it means he gets what he THINKS he wants.

And all this time he is completely deluding himself, simply because he honestly believes he is THE ONLY one who matters – who counts, who is Australia ( God help us ) …… and who holds dominion over all.

Well – Australia has a MASSIVE newsflash for him. ………….

What an effing nut case. !!!!

  42. DanDark

Annie ……Yes what an “effing”poor excuse for a politician too the Rabbid Rabbit is
Goooooo Victoria, I havnt been this overjoyed for years 🙂
Naptime is conceding defeat right now in real time……Goooooooo Victoria 🙂

  43. Annie B

Yaaaay ……….. Denis Napthine has conceded. ( 9.54 pm AEDST ).

Now – we shall see. !!!

Hope Daniel Andrews is circumspect in all his dealings forthwith. !! …… He will need to be.

Interesting how well the Greens did – they are a future power to be seriously considered, I think.

  44. DanDark

    Annie
The greens have pulled a couple of rabbits from a hat, good on them 🙂

  45. Blanik

    Yeee Haaaa. I was wrong!!!!

  46. Blanik

Has the Captain spoken yet? What a beautiful day it is in Victoria aka ‘Jewel in the liberal crown’. hahahahaahaha

  47. Michael Taylor

Blanik, it’s my guess that he’s in the middle of some crisis talks at the moment.

  48. Salstarat

Annie B, I can express myself in any way I choose … if it is not to your liking, I really don’t care! You can say what you will and I will give my opinion in any way I like. Stop your judgemental hyper-criticism of other people’s comments and remember we are on the same side!

  49. Blanik

Yes Michael, you are completely correct, but I can’t remember being so happy about an election result since 1972.
But, I want to see the man squirm and maybe even have a tear in his eye and a trembling lip.

Surely that isn’t too much to hope for. lol

  50. DanDark

Blanik…..Winners are Grinners….And Victorians are the winners,,,Bye Bye Tony you are next

  51. mars08

I’d love to see the new government shine a ”great big spotlight” Napthine’s time in office. Investigate their contracts with private business for a start. There has to be accountability beyond the ballot box.

  52. Erotic Moustache

Blanik…..Winners are Grinners….And Victorians are the winners,,,Bye Bye Tony you are next

No, Campbell Newman is next – in a perfect world at least.

  53. Blanik

Do you all have a liberal party request to access all your personal FB details at the top of this original post? The cancel doesn’t cancel incidentally

  54. Rossleigh

It’s a photo, Blanik, so it’s harmless enough!
    Although…

  55. Blanik

ahhhhhhh OK thanks I thought for a moment that I was important. Bugger lol

  56. DanDark

Oh yep sorry…Cant Do Cambell, who was parachuted into lie to Queenslanders for a term, wreck the reef, turn QLD into a Quarry and just generally wreck the joint,
Cant Do Cambell would have to be a bit nervous today, One term Govs might just be the new norm…..For the sake of QLDers, Cant Do will be in the can come March 🙂

  57. Blanik

Newman would be as good as Napthalene.

  58. Erotic Moustache

For the sake of QLDers, Cant Do will be in the can come March 🙂

For a little while there it looked like it might be possible, but he appears to have clawed back a modicum of support in the last few months. Given the LNP’s extraordinary majority, it’ll take a miracle to topple him. But the result should put Labor into striking distance for the next election. Newman himself will very likely lose his own seat.

  59. DanDark

Some commentators in Vic didn’t think Libs would lose either, soooooo hold hope out
Cant Do Cambell will be canned 🙂

  60. Möbius Ecko

Agree Erotic Moustache. People forget the absolute massive majority Newman won by. By the way that win attributed to the Labor Federal government, my how things are flipped over when the Liberal shoe is on the other foot.

Difference DanDark is that the Libs only had a slim margin in Victoria, not the historic margin Newman won by.

  61. Erotic Moustache

Yeah, that majority is a real concern. It’ll mean another term for the LNP, but hopefully Labor will get close enough to be in touch next time. Sadly by the time that happens half the State will have been “leased” out and there’ll be no way to undo it.

  62. DanDark

    Yep Mobius,
QLD is a basket case with a majority, but if we have a defeated attitude, we will be defeated as sure as the sun rises everyday…Positive beats negative any day in my book 🙂 stay positive QLDers…

  63. Möbius Ecko

It will also give Newman more time to undermine the democratic process to favour the LNP in elections. Conservative governments in Australia have a history of this, with the Abbott government beginning their undermining of the process and I believe Newman with no Upper House for balance also sneaking in regulations that will distort elections.

  64. Erotic Moustache

The lies and distortions of the Newman Government have already begun in earnest. I got some LNP propaganda in the mail recently in which they claimed that elective surgery waiting lists had been cut by 92%. The problem with that claim is that the stats don’t include the wait time for the initial consult with a specialist, which can be years. They are also playing fast and loose with “categorisation” which allows hospitals to avoid certain benchmarks. It’s so mendacious it’s sickening.

  65. David

One of the Insiders panel, not sure who, mentioned there was a meeting of the full cabinet today

  66. Annie B

    @ Salstarat …….

    Whoa there …….

I was agreeing with Geoff Andrews comment and . …. I notice you didn’t have a go at him, ( funny that ) yet his original comment to you was much harsher than mine – – – !!

What’s with the insulting comment that you posted to me which in part was :

………. ” Stop your judgemental hyper-criticism of other people’s comments and remember we are on the same side! “……………

I .. DID . say .. I .. UNDERSTAND .. your extreme anger and frustration ( and I do ) ……. and there were two ways of answering me on that alone.

It’s obvious which of the two you chose. hmmmm !!

    End of ………
