Day to Day Politics: A Government fixated on hate.

Tuesday 1 November 2016

1 I don’t think I have ever seen less empathetic governments than the Abbott/Turnbull ones. They seem intent on cutting the threads that are the very tapestry that weaves the fabric of our society together.

They are a dithering, squabbling deceitful lot intent on quashing anyone who disagrees with them. They have some ideological loathing of the poor, the downtrodden and vulnerable and want them to fund the excesses of the rich.

Turnbull is everything but what we were so foolish enough to think he was.

2 Yesterday I wrote Of course it is a diversionary tactic,( particularly as there haven’t been any boat arrivals in over two years) to take people’s minds from the government’s long list of failures and its leader’s incapacity to present a narrative of what the government is trying to do.”

And of course the following day both Turnbull and Dutton are out and about spruiking their new crackdown to stop refugees held in offshore detention facilities from ever coming to Australia.

What a joke they. The real truth is that they are trying to lock Labor into supporting their legislation.

The leader of the Opposition has responded saying.

“It seems ridiculous to me that a genuine refugee who settles in the US or Canada and becomes a US or Canadian citizen is banned from visiting Australia as a tourist, businessman or businesswoman 40 years down the track,”

I could take that a step further by asking this question. What if a young boy or girl returned to their country of origin and under whatever circumstance became a minister or indeed the country’s leader, would Australia deny him or her entry.

They are the most educated lot to ever govern the country but you have to wonder if they have a collective brain in their heads.

“Whether he likes it or not, refugees such as Frank Lowy, Gustav Nossal and Hieu Van Le have made a huge contribution to Australia. As an Australian, that’s something I’m very proud of’’

“Two weeks ago, Mr Turnbull was happy to trade a vote in the Senate for weaker gun laws; last week, his government lied about dodgy data to smear single mums, and now he’s shown he’s happy to suck up to chase the votes of One Nation senators to fight off Tony Abbott and keep his job,”

Shorten is absolutely right. He is sucking up to the likes of Hansen and the red necks in his own party. Turnbull is putting down some insurance for future favours. And Pauline is delighted to be able to say that the Coalition supports her policies.

The problem for Turnbull selling this is that its intent is just so obvious, so transparent, that the dumbest kid in school could have thought it up, let alone Coalition members with degrees from the most prestigious learning institutions in the world.

Shorten concluded:

“He’s earning the praise of Pauline Hanson – I hope he’s proud of that’’

3 For a reason I cannot explain I decided to post Sundays piece on the Andrew Bolt Support Group Facebook page.

Here are some responses.

Irene Hough. ‘’Oh please, go back to the middle east, whinging Muslims, or learn to fit in and be grateful.’’

David Redmond. ‘’Incredible but there are plenty like John Lord out there. Champions of unlimited no questions asked welfare, incursions into free speech with 18C, dismantling Soveriegn border protection, cheering on the CFMEU and no doubt its 100 odd officials before our Courts. You might wonder when he’ll ever grow out of his school boy politics. Je suis Bill Leak.’’

Brad Ryan John lord you are a fool”

Steven Ryan “John Lord your a dick.!!”

Trevor Varis “This juvenile crap can be demolished point by point, but really, who wants to argue with a child? The writer forgets it was Labor/Greens who drowned 1200 and placed another 50,000 in concentration camps, declaring them to be illegal. The logic is all twisted, it is from a pathetic, and miserable mind. More sad than anything.’’

Bill Pattinsen. John, why is it that you reject divergent commentary on your ‘Independent’ website, but have the gall to post on our conservative page?

I think I got off rather lightly.

4 I was listening to Donald Trump making a speech and in doing so admitted that he had put in $100 million of his own money into his election campaign. I wondered why it was not possible for Malcolm Turnbull to do the same. Why do we have to wait 12 months to know who has donated to political parties?

5 What follows is an edited extract from an essay I wrote titled Only in America for the left-wing blog Crooks and Lias.

It had over 25,000 reads and I received many emails of thanks.

Now I know the two candidates are disliked for differing reasons but is America about to elect a sick deluded man of no redeeming features, full of racial hatred, bile and misogyny. A deluded pathetic liar unsuitable for the highest office in the land, if not the world. One who sees complex problems and impregnates them with populism and implausible black and white solutions.

A person of limited intellect and understanding only capable of seeing the world through the prism of his own wealth. The far edges of knowledge seem to have passed him by. Matters requiring deep philosophical consideration seem beyond him.

His opinions on subjects of internal and international importance are so shallow that one would think he spent the entirety of his youth in the wading pool at the local swimming pool, or six years in grade 6 and never academically advanced.

A crash through politician with a ubiquitous mouth. A man who is an incoherent mess, who bounces back after each disaster thinking he has been impressive while those around him are laughing their heads off.

My thought for the day.

It is probably fair to say that you cannot be a good leader without character. Character is the defining point of leadership.

“Character is a combination of traits that etch the outlines of a life, governing moral choices and infusing personal and professional conduct. It’s an elusive thing, easily cloaked or submerged by the theatrics of politics. But unexpected moments can sometimes reveal the fibres from which it is woven.’’

The majority of people incarcerated on Manus Is. and Nauru have apparently been assessed to be genuine refugees, in the real meaning of the word. They are seeking a better life in another place for real reasons that anybody with a gram of compassion could understand. They are not commercial migrants seeking entrance to a country through the back door. Our government, and the people who support them, are cold hearted and almost non-human in their condemnation.

Very depressing. LNP and One Nation are becoming one big happy family. Next, the PM will be calling Climate Change a hoax to keep Malcolm Roberts happy.

  3. Kronomex

Turnbull and the Largely Nasty Party are straddling a very big razor blade while trying to keep their balance on the two rickety tables of their one seat majority and mandate. He has to rely on sucking up to the loonies on the “independent” side of the house and accusing Labor of not being there for Team Osstraya. Things will only get worse…oh yes, forgot about the Abbott in the gears…for him and the LNP.

I like The Donald’s latest public brain fart about Hilary possibly allowing 650 million people to flood into the US in a week. I’m not sure but I seem to remember that The Donald lent the money to Donald for his campaign and expects that Donald will repay the money to The Donald.

We’ve beaten the Americans again John , the person you described in your essay , was elected by the Australian people in 2013.

  5. helvityni

It’s all so predictable, rather than facing the public anger of his actions, our PM goes North, trying to look benevolent amongst Indigenous children, the leather jacket is, sorry was, for Q&A, the sporty parka is just the right touch when conversing with the forgotten people about their CASHLESS cards….

Abbott (being of a lower caste) didn’t quite understand the etiquette, and travelled dressed in a suit when making a similar trip…

H’, that link had absolutely nothing to do with this post, but more in common with the usual issues you raise when trying to derail threads.

It’s probably an appropriate time to mention that every author (as well as the moderators and admin team) have the right to delete any comment that is unrelated to the topic. It’s not censorship. It’s respect to the author and the other commenters who are discussing or debating the topic.

I’m guessing that a number of authors are growing tired of seeing their posts generate into discussions on the ills of the Earth’s population and that the population needs to be decreased or we’ll all be ruined. It may be true, and we’ll be more than happy to discuss it when we write an article about it.

So if comments do disappear, you’ll know why.

You are wrong. It has everything to do with it, you just can’t see it.
    Thanks for the heads up.
    Cheers.

with point five, you would almost think you were talking about Tony Abbott

    Hi John,

What are the educational credentials they have? How do they stack up against Rudd, Gillard, Swan etc… What makes you continuously say, they are the most educated lot? Is it because Abbott got a scholarship, as did Brandis?

So did Abbotts daughter and was clearly not the preferred choice in awarding the scholarship. I feel sorry for the genuine person, who missed out because Abbotts daughter got the scholarship ahead of a genuine person.

And for Brandis, was he not rejected by the bar association of QLD? As for Dutton, I am not entirely sure who the poor educators were, having to deal with a man of that character.

Likewise, are Pyne, Hunt, etc. what are their brilliantly educated achievements.

I am harping on this, simply because you use the term quite often in your writings. I am yet to be convinced that this disorganized, infighting, no-plan for anything, half cooked thought bubble mob, who behaves so uneducated in almost every step/statement, is the MOST EDUCATED GOVERNMENT WE EVER HAD.

Sure this applies to Trump as well.

  11. keerti

So this last filth from an acting prime minister who was recently extolling our great, successful, multicultural society which he described as the best in the world. Interesting to note that John Keyes (NZ PM) immediately refused to be involved with anything that would create two classes of citizens in New Zealand (a requirement for refugee resettlement there), but then you’d expect that from the PM of a successful multicultural country.

  12. crypt0

    Klaus…
If you give an idiot some education, what do you end up with?
    A. An educated idiot, and it seems this government is full of them, some less educated than others.

  13. Klaus

    Crypt0

Yes, that is true! but if you have a psychopath, who is educated at Oxford, would you call him an educated psychopath or simple a psychopath.

Sorry, doesn’t feel right talking about simplistic shit like that. Just wanted to comment.

  14. helvityni

crypt, whatever their educational standard, it has obviously not had a civilizing effect on them; they are rough as guts as my old inner-city Aussie friend used to say. Also they have hearts of stone.

keerti, John Keyes might be a right-winger but he’s heads above our two lousy Liberal leaders….

  15. johnlord2013

Klaus. My comments originate from an article from Miranda Devine in which she outlined the educational qualifications. My original post was titled Qualified to Govern.

John, the moderators will be deleting comments before that ever happens.

Point 3 – I think I got off rather lightly.

How do you think I would fare if I posted this pic on that page?

  19. Terry2

What a supreme irony it would be if one of these folk from Manus or Nauru subsequently gained citizenship in Canada or the USA, became an acclaimed brain surgeon and in the year 2040 was called upon to perform intricate, state of the art surgey in Sydney and the ghost of Peter Dutton rose up and shrieked ‘you shall not enter, I have so proclaimed’.

How infinitely sad if the person requiring the lifesaving brain surgery was a grandchild of that same Peter Dutton.

We have the worst government . since 1949 and it’s the LNP,……As the Australia Institute’s research in June found – across a broad range of economic measures, the Abbott/Turnbull government has performed the worst of any Australian government since 1949. Economist Jim Stanford’s report examines economic performance across 12 indicators – including GDP per capita, the unemployment rate, employment growth and the growth of real business investment and intellectual property investment …

  21. Klaus

    Thanks John,

coming from Miranda Devine explains everything. I lost that little fact and took it accidentally to be your opinion.

  22. Harquebus

    John Lord
Hijacking is not my intention. You are in need of education, that is all.
    Cheers.
